The purpose of the program is to support joint activities that enhance the work, interests or goals of two or more divisions.

Description

The Committee on Division/APA Relations (CODAPAR) of the American Psychological Association seeks proposals for collaborative projects sponsored by two or more APA divisions. The purpose of the program is to support joint activities that enhance the work, interests or goals of two or more divisions. Examples include, but are not limited to: 

  • Furthering APA's goals of working to advance psychology as a science, a profession and a means of promoting human welfare.

  • Projects that promote collaboration between the science and practice of psychology.

  • Fostering the recruitment of ethnic minorities into psychology, APA or division membership or APA governance.

  • Activities that focus on a currently unaddressed topic or area in psychology.

Eligibility

Proposals must meet the following requirements to be considered by CODAPAR:

  • Projects must be sponsored by at least two divisions. Priority will be given to projects that demonstrate significant collaboration between the sponsoring divisions.

  • The projects may not duplicate an activity currently being undertaken by another APA office or group.

  • The project must be completed within 12 months of receipt of funding. If projects will extend beyond 12 months, proposals must indicate which deliverable tasks will be funded by the grant in the initial 12 months of funding. Failure to complete the funded deliverable tasks within 12 months may render participating divisions ineligible for future IGP requests.

How to Apply

Contents and Submission

Proposals must be submitted to CODAPAR Staff Liaison Veronica Allen by September 12 and should include the following parts (it is recommended that submissions use the CODAPAR proposal submission template (PDF, 133KB):

  • Cover Page (including sponsoring divisions and 150-word abstract).

  • Budget Summary (including amount of request, any matching funds and justification).

  • Proposal (limited to four pages) that includes:

    - The rationale, methods of implementation, goals and measurable outcomes. 

    - Brief comments on how the project meets the purposes of the Interdivisional Grants Program. 

    - How each division will participate and assist in meeting outcomes of project. 

    - How the project aligns with the goals and objectives of APA's strategic plan.

  • Project Timeline.

Review Criteria

Proposals will be reviewed and ranked using the following criteria. It is the responsibility of the sponsoring divisions to ensure these elements are included in the proposal. 

  • Clearly stated goals and a well-defined outcome.

  • Innovative project goals and outcomes.

  • Alignment with the ongoing goals of the divisions involved.

  • True collaboration between the sponsoring divisions.

  • Alignment with the goals and objectives of APA's strategic plan.

  • Reasonableness of budget request and budget justification. (Note: Funds should be used to support direct project costs rather than indirect costs, such as conference travel.)

Awards and Reporting

CODAPAR will review proposals and make recommendations to the board of directors at its December 2014 meeting. Funds will be made available and sent to the lead division in January 2015. Recipients of grants will be required to provide an interim progress report by July 1, 2015, and a final report by Jan. 15, 2016. In addition, CODAPAR may request status updates throughout the project to be shared with the APA Division Dialogue and APA Monitor. Not filing the interim or final reports will render participating divisions ineligible for applying for future grants. Once reports have been submitted, divisions will again be eligible.

  • “A Web-Based Concussion Toolkit – A Collaborative Resource for Clinical, Research, and Legislative Efforts” — $5,000
    Divisions 19, 22, 31, 40, 47
    Abstract: The proposed web-based “Concussion Toolkit” will provide resources for clinicians, researchers and legislative advocates working in the concussion field. As information related to concussion is being presented by the media at a historic rate (frequently with limited empirical backing), there is need for empirically-based information on the assessment and treatment of concussion-related sequelae. Psychologists are particularly poised to meet the increasing clinical/research demand, as they have produced much of the scientific literature on concussion. Nonetheless, legislation has been passed in some states which limit participation of psychologists in concussion-related care. Psychologists working in military, sports, veteran and civilian arenas would benefit from a one-source repository of empirically-based information on assessment and treatment, as well as information on “lessons learned” with regard to legislation-based advocacy. The involved divisions of APA will provide information, reviews and links related to their specific areas of interest as it pertains to concussion. In addition, the toolkit will include information on how best to lobby legislatures to change laws in this area (i.e., to advocate for psychologists to be included in the process). 

  • “Exercise and Mental Health: Resources for Psychologists, Consumers and the Public” — $3,195

    Abstract: The proposed Exercise and Mental Health website will provide resources for practitioners and the public regarding the general benefits of exercise for mental health as well as for those with specific conditions. The evidence for the positive effects of exercise on mental health continues to accumulate. However, the use of exercise in mental health treatment regimens is lagging behind the available evidence, for example in comparative effectiveness relative to medication in depression and in prevention of cognitive decline in normal aging and dementia. The proposed website will be a central resource for practitioners, clients and others interested for information related to the benefits of exercise in mental health, including availability of printable fact sheets. The website will also provide areas designed for specific populations and conditions such as for those who are injured and/or disabled, involved in rehabilitation, for older adults and veterans.

  • “Establishment of the Mental Health Mobile Phone Application Review Database” — $4,450
    Divisions: 29, 46, 56
    Abstract: Divs. 56, 29 and 46 propose the development of a Mental Health Mobile Phone Application Review database, linked to the three division websites. By providing reviews of applications in an easily accessible format, the project will meet APA's goal of pursuit of excellence by providing APA members with evaluated tools to augment service delivery. The database will also enhance the potential effectiveness of self-help strategies, thus serving the community and highlighting the role of APA in championing ethical and empirically based interventions, core values of APA. The project serves the strategic goal of expanding psychology’s role in advancing health through education and creation of what is likely to be a highly accessed database for researchers and professionals. Beginning our work with evaluation of apps related to stress/trauma/anxiety, we have an ideal combination of experts with Div. 56 (knowledge of stress/trauma), 29 (expertise in psychotherapy) and 46 (expertise in technology). 

  • “Improving School Climate for LGBT Youth: Resources and Interventions” — $5,000
    Divisions: 16, 44
    Abstract: Division 16 and 44, among others, have been crafting text for a possible new resolution concerning LGBT youth in schools. Any recommendations for how schools can improve their climates to support the resiliency, mental health and health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and gender diverse youth will only be effective if there are materials, resources and models that can be implemented by school staff and administrators, school psychologists and community mental health providers. We propose a task force that would generate a detailed resource list, model curricula or other resources that can be disseminated to school districts. The grant would support the creation of materials for use by school psychologists, school administrators, staff, teachers and community agencies focused on the health of LGBT youth.

  • “Promoting Brief, Evidence-based Assessment and Intervention in Interdisciplinary Health Care Settings: An Online Educational Tool Kit and Conference Event for Students” — $1,550
    Divisions: 22, 38, 40
    Abstract: Evidence increasingly supports health service psychologists as beneficial components of collaborative healthcare models. Health psychologists, rehabilitation psychologists, and clinical neuropsychologists are among those most likely to work in interdisciplinary medical settings. Clinical psychologists within these specialties share primary goals of translating science into practical, evidence-based clinical practice and of working collaboratively as part of a broader health care team. For graduate students planning to pursue careers in one of these specialty areas, additional training is warranted to prepare for the unique demands associated with interdisciplinary healthcare provision. Accordingly, Divs. 22, 38, and 40 aim to design a web-based educational resource for graduate-level students training in these specialty areas, and to facilitate an educational presentation for students at the 2014 APA convention that addresses pathways to board certification in these respective healthcare specialties. A $2,500 budget is proposed to accomplish these aims.

  • “Psychological Science & Innovative Care Strategies: Informing Health Care Redesign  & Improving Care for Youths” — $5,000
    Divisions: 37, 53, 54
    Abstract: This proposal brings together collaborative teams from Divs. 53 (Clinical Child/Adolescent), 37 (Child/Family Policy/ Practice) and 54 (Pediatrics) to address the question: how can we best mobilize the science of psychology to improve health and mental/behavioral health care for youths in this era of health care reform? Aligning with two goals of APA’s strategic plan, expanding psychology’s role in advancing health and increasing recognition of psychology as a science, we will form collaborative teams to examine key issues for improving health/mental health care, including: improving care access, reducing health disparities; enhancing quality of care, strengthening evidence-based and evidence-informed care; prevention; integrated behavioral health and health care; and workforce development/training. Researchers and clinicians from the teams will work with stakeholders and policy-makers in a 1-day forum, with forum results presented at the APA convention, integrated in a report/pdf-book, supplemented with forum recordings, and available as online resources for the field.

2013

  • "Coaching Psychology Competency Project" — $5,000
    Divisions: 13, 14
    Abstract: Divisions 13 (Consulting) and 14 (Industrial and Organizational) are collaborating on a project to develop a competency model for the practice of coaching psychology. This project will fund two key steps in the practice analysis phase of the project: 1) interviews with subject matter experts, and 2) development of the practice analysis survey questionnaire. These steps and the output from them are described, elaborated and highlighted in yellow on the attached project plan. While many members of both divisions are donating their expertise and time, these two steps are likely to require tools and resources necessary to administer the project in an effective and efficient manner. 

  • "Collaborative Perspectives on Addiction" — $5,000
    Divisions: 28, 50
    Abstract: Two APA divisions are dedicated to understanding and ameliorating the harm caused by substance misuse and addictive behaviors, but from different perspectives. Both are interested in research, training and clinical practice in the field of addiction, but Div. 28 places more emphasis on the psychopharmacology of substance use disorders, and Div. 50 focuses comparatively more on clinical practice and on a broader range of addictive behaviors. This CODAPAR grant will provide needed funds for a conference that will bring together members from divisions 28 and 50 with a focus on engaging students and early career psychologists in cross-division collaborations. Without CODAPAR grant-enabled discounts, there is a strong likelihood that only established investigators and clinicians will attend. The conference will provide opportunities for networking, research presentations and pre-conference workshops to facilitate communication across divisions. Attendance by students and early career psychologists will be encouraged by exciting keynote speakers, networking opportunities, and, most vitally, by providing discounted registration and travel awards for students and early career attendees. This is the inaugural year of what we expect will be an annual event. 

  • "Short Course in Policy Involvement by Psychologists" — $5,000
    Divisions: 8, 9, 27, 34, 41
    Abstract: The proposed project includes the development and implementation of a two-day short course aimed at assisting psychologists at all career stages in developing skills for policy involvement as well as providing exposure to different avenues and career tracks in several policy arenas. The workshop is broader than the federal advocacy training offered by APA in considering multiple ways that psychological researchers interested in social issues can be involved in policy work and consultation. It builds on the mutual concern of the participating divisions in the policy relevance of psychological training and science, the different expertise of the divisions, and some previous collaborative relationships. Although the proposed workshop focuses on environmental issues and sustainability as a context for considering policy involvement, the goal is to develop a model for a regular and self-sustaining training program that also could be offered at stand-alone conferences of different APA divisions and professional societies.

  • "Dissemination of Evidence-Based Practices for Children: Needs and Barriers at State and Local Levels" — $4,861
    Divisions: 37, 43, 53
    Abstract: Given the lack of applied information about needs and barriers at agency and providers' levels to adequate implementation and dissemination of evidence-based practices in child mental health, it is imperative to better understand the constraints and barriers that agencies and providers experience. This aim is consistent with the APA's policy statement on evidence-based practice in psychology (2005), and with the recommendations of the APA Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice with Children and Adolescents (Kazak et al, 2010). The goals of the planned CODAPAR-funded project are to examine the issue of needs and barriers related to dissemination of evidence-based practices at two levels: (1) needs and barriers at the level of state and community agencies, and (2) in an exploratory way, needs and barriers at the practitioner level. It is anticipated that this information will lead to national, regional and local policies related to more effective dissemination of evidence-based intervention practices.

  • "The Forensic Practitioner's Toolbox" — $5,000
    Divisions: 41, 42
    Abstract: A significant number of independent practice psychologists are expanding their practice activities to the criminal and civil justice systems. This phenomenon arises from a convergence of a demand for these services from the justice system and the need for independent practitioners to find practice markets that fall outside the purview of managed care. However, many psychologists are not prepared to do forensic work for a host of reasons, including a lack of understanding of the role psychologists play in the justice system, the difference between therapeutic and forensic roles, the guidelines that shape forensic practice, and the application of ethical standards in forensic cases. The goal of the proposed project is to provide forensic practitioners with information and resources pertaining to forensic work through a number of methods including the introduction of a specific forensic practice concept for nine consecutive months. A joint website will be developed titled “The Forensic Practitioner's Toolbox.” The website will be collaboratively developed by both academic forensic psychologists and forensic clinicians. It will include publications, blogs and an interactive continuing education module. The website and programming that will hopefully become institutionalized for the two divisions and continue past the grant funding period.

  • "Electronic Psychological Record Keeping: Meeting the Ethical and Legal Standard of Care through State Specific Templates" — $5,000
    Divisions: 31, 42
    Abstract: The purpose of this project is to specify how each state's laws regulating psychologists fits with the creation of electronic and paper case records. Our team of researchers and reviewers would create a state-specific template for providing a sufficient electronic health record (EHR) record in light of both state and federal law. The template for the EHR will guide our members, in part, to prepare for the full implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how to work efficaciously with accountable care organizations. The state-specific templates also will focus upon protecting the privacy interests of psychology clients within the confines of the laws. The project will curb psychologists charting too much. Charting inappropriate amounts of information can violate the privacy interests of their clients. The templates also will create a sufficient EHR in light of emerging national standards. 

  • "Integrating Environmental and Social Justice" — $4,140
    Divisions: 9, 34
    Abstract: The missions of divisions 9 and 34 have significant overlap: Both are interested in the connections between human and environmental well-being and in research and applications that support human and environmental health. The proposed project will bring together members  from divisions 9 and 34 (as well as any others interested in attending) around substantive programming at SPSSI’s 2012 Biennial Conference, which will include a significant focus on environmental issues as part of the core conference themes. The conference will provide dedicated opportunities for networking and for papers and posters related to this theme, and SPSSSI’s pre-conference Early Career Workshop will dedicate one of its sessions to exploring the connections between sustainability and justice.  Attendance will be encouraged by an awards program that waives the registration fee for graduate student or early career attendees who are judged to have the top four submissions (papers or posters) that integrate environmental and social justice issues 

  • "GeroCentral:  An Internet Geropsychology Resource Clearinghouse" — $5,000
    Divisions: 12, 20
    Abstract: There is a severe geropsychology workforce crisis to treat the fastest growing and most complex segment of the population. Access to educational materials and training opportunities for psychologists and trainees about later life is critical now, to ensure a more adequate workforce pipeline. Each of the four major geropsychology organizations in the U.S. (APA divisions 12/II and 20, Council of Professional Geropsychology Training Programs, and Psychologists in Long Term Care), has training and professional development resources; not all of this information is easy to locate or access, however, and it is all incomplete. The goal of this project is to bring together the available geropsychology training and professional development resources in one Internet clearinghouse website to maximize organizational effectiveness, increase access to geropsychology training, and collaboratively create new tools to increase the effectiveness of existing resources, including the first in a series of geropsychology webinars.  

  • "Special Concerns and Success Strategies of Women, Students of Color, LGBT and Multi-Cultural Students in Psychology Graduate Programs" — $3,660
    Divisions: 35, 44, 45, APAGS
    Abstract: This project will assess the stressors and coping strategies of women, students of color, LGBT and multicultural psychology graduate students. This topic is especially relevant considering the growth of these student populations in graduate programs and dearth of literature addressing their special concerns or the self-care methods these students use to succeed. Past research is particularly scarce on the success strategies of students who identify as LGBT or with multiple cultural groups. The purpose of this study is to conduct a nationwide survey of female, ethnic, LGBT and multicultural graduate students to assess the challenges these students encounter, the self-care and emotional wellness strategies they employ, and the frequency of engagement in these coping strategies. An email-based intervention will be implemented over four months to increase students’ awareness of wellbeing strategies and engagement in self-care. Study results will be disseminated through newsletters and Web.  

  • "Leadership Diversity Summit" — $7,210 
    Divisions: 13, 14, 35, 44, 45, 51
    Abstract: The proposed Leadership Diversity Summit is an interdivisional juncture aimed at capturing the diversity across many APA divisions. We will use a version of the Delphi method to conduct the Summit. The goal of this process is to forward the identification of new dimensions, facilitators and challenges of leadership associated with diverse leaders in contexts of diverse followers. We hope to explore the paradigms for leadership diversity. Another outcome of the summit is a written report of the state of leadership and diversity based on our aforementioned sessions. We anticipate hosting the summit a day before or following the National Multicultural Conference & Summit in January 2013 hosted in Houston. 

2011

  • "Increasing Diversity in Psychological Science Through Mentoring" — $13,000
    Divisions: 3, 6, 28, CARE 
    Abstract: This project will help attract junior scientists (advanced graduate and postdoctoral students), especially those from underrepresented minority groups, to APA and divisions 3, 6 and 28. Recognizing that true community does not necessarily emerge from demographic diversity, the program also is designed to promote intergroup dialog within this more diverse junior cohort and to instill a shared culture of service to the discipline and to APA. The program is comprised of a highly individualized series of mentoring activities. More specifically, the goals of this program are (1) to enable young investigators to develop meaningful contacts with senior scientists and federal agency program directors in their respective fields, including scientists who, themselves, belong to underrepresented minority groups; (2) to improve the awardees’ ability to navigate a variety of professional settings; (3) to provide constructive feedback on mentees’ specific research goals and career plans; and, (4) to address some of the challenges and opportunities of working in multicultural institutions via a diversity training workshop and discussion. 

  • "Increasing the Visibility of LGBT Science Through an Online Directory of Researchers" — $4,040
    Divisions: 8, 9, 14, 17, 35, 44, 51 
    Abstract: The goal of this project is to create an online searchable directory of scientists who conduct psychological research related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues. This directory will function as a virtual “home” for such researchers and serve as a public resource for students, psychologists, policy analysts, and media representatives who wish to identify researchers with expertise in specific LGBT issues. This project brings together representatives from seven divisions that emphasize the importance of LGBT science. In doing so, this endeavor will connect researchers from divisions that have historically had little interaction but share the goal of advancing LGBT scholarship through research and research training. The directory resulting from this project can play a role in (a) increasing the visibility of LGBT science, (b) increasing access to accurate sources of information about sexual orientation and gender identity, and (c) facilitating the formation of professional mentoring and collaborative relationships. 

  • "Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Clients" — $6,650
    Divisions: 16, 17, 35, 39, 42, 44, 45, 51, 53, 54, CLGBTC 
    Abstract: This project will convene a task force that will be charged with the development of practice guidelines for working with transgender clients. In the past month, seven APA members were selected to serve on the task force. Throughout the project, members of the task force will research, write, and revise guidelines for psychological practice with transgender and gender nonconforming clients. Special attention will be given to the implications for science and practice. Additionally, the guidelines will address the intersections of other elements of diversity. Suggested content areas for the guidelines include the following: 1) a list of the major treatment concerns in psychotherapy with transgender and gender nonconforming clients and their families; 2) concise review of the pertinent literature (much of it empirical research) for each guideline; 3) specific suggestions for applying each practice guideline; 4) a resource for clinical training sites and supervision; and 5) a source of information for consultants regarding institutionalized stigma and its effects upon transgender and gender nonconforming individuals, their relationships, and their families.
