1. What is Rightslink®?

Rightslink® is an online permissions service. It was created by Copyright Clearance Center, the world's premier provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions. Rightslink® enables customers to license content on demand directly from the APA web site. Rightslink® is not a document delivery service. Rightslink® provides permission for reuse only.

2. How Does Rightslink® Work?

    a) Locate on the APA website the journal article or book you wish to reuse.

    b) Click the Permissions link associated with the article or book you have just located.

    c) Follow the simple instructions to obtain a Quick Price quotation. The price you are charged involves many variables, such as number of pages of content being reused, requester type, quantity, and a permission fee set by APA. In some cases there is no fee, but you will still obtain a permission agreement from APA.

[NOTE: Some permission requests cannot be completed through Rightslink® and require additional assistance from APA. If you select such a category, you will see a special instruction.]

    d) Click the Place Order button to begin the order process.

To place your order, you will be prompted to set up an account or confirm/edit account information; confirm your order; confirm your payment method; and accept the terms and conditions.

    e) An order confirmation is displayed listing the details of your Rightslink® order.

It offers additional links for viewing the terms and conditions, editing your account information, and editing your order specifications.

    f) An e-mail confirmation will be sent to you listing the details of your order.

3. When Do You Need APA Permission?

Please see our Policy statement for details of when you need APA Permission.

Once in Rightslink® the easy Quick Price process will clarify when permission is required.

It is the requesting party's responsibility to ensure that the material is original to APA and that the material was not reprinted with permission from a non-APA source.

4. Why Do You Need Permission?

Intellectual works are protected by the U.S. Copyright Act. It is an infringement of copyright law to reproduce/reuse/republish a copyrighted work without the prior consent of the copyright holder. The American Psychological Association is the copyright holder for APA published material unless otherwise noted. Go to http://www.copyright.gov/ to learn more about copyright law.

The requesting party is responsible for obtaining permission from APA before reproducing, reusing, or republishing any APA-copyrighted material. The requesting party is also responsible for ensuring that the material they are using is original to APA and that the material was not reprinted by APA with permission from a non-APA source.

5. What Kinds of Reuse Does Rightslink® Cover?

Rightslink® can process your permission requests to reuse APA content in:

  • Books
  • Journals
  • Newsletters
  • Magazines/newspapers
  • Brochures
  • Doctoral thesis
  • Photocopies
  • Course packs
  • Electronic reserve
  • Continuing education
  • Internet/intranet

If you are the author of the requested APA-copyrighted content and wish to reuse it for your personal purposes, Rightslink® will generally grant you a license with no charge.

If you are the author of the requested APA-copyrighted content, and wish to reuse it within another APA publication, no APA permission is required. You do not need to use Rightslink®.
