Coalition for Psychology in Schools and Education December Meeting

The Coalition for Psychology in the Schools and Education (CPSE) met on December 3-5, 2004. The meeting was held at the American Psychological Association in Washington DC. The CPSE is sponsored by APA’s Education Directorate and is devoted to contributing to the quality of pre-K through 12th grade education. The Coalition strives to promote cooperation among APA divisions and various interest groups and affiliates who are working to enhance education and teacher training for children and adolescents. The Coalition has grown to include representatives from the 13 divisions, Psychology Teachers at the Community Colleges (PTACC), Committee of Teachers of Psychology at Secondary Schools (TOPSS), Council of Representatives’ Child and Adolescent Caucus, Committee on Psychological Testing and Assessment (CPTA), and the APA Board of Educational Affairs (BEA).

At the Coalition’s December 3-5 meeting, CPSE members met to review data, which is being collected by a survey to examine teachers’ needs for professional development. The survey gathers information about teachers’ perceptions of professional development in several areas including classroom management, instructional skills, classroom diversity, family outreach, and other teaching skills and knowledge informed by psychological science. The survey will help form APA professional development courses for teachers based on the needs teachers identify.

The Coalition also met to discuss ideas for further growth and development of the Coalition, including an online professional development course for Pre-K through 12 teachers on aligning classroom assessment with educational standards. The course will be offered in 2005 as part of APA’s Online Academy series. Additional online courses addressing the topics of individualized instruction and classroom management are in the planning stages.

Another major activity discussed at the December meeting included the APA’s ongoing development of a model that will be used as a guide to revise APA’s Learner-Centered Psychological Principles: Guidelines for School Redesign and Reform (LCPP). The model, developed by participants at the 2004 Education Leadership Conference, strives to improve collaboration among psychologists, Pre-K through12 teachers and school districts. The revised LCPP will then be used as a basis to develop criteria for evaluating the rigor of various assessments used in school improvement designs and the conditions that would allow these assessments to be used rigorously.

The Coalition is offering sessions at the 2005 AERA (American Educational Research Association) and AACTE (American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education) Conferences and invites affiliates and division representatives to attend the meetings and become increasingly involved in the Coalition. The Coalition appreciates APA members’ participation in this important collaborative effort, bringing psychologists together to improve our nation’s educational agenda.
