Diversity Education Resources

In 2006, APA President Gerry Koocher convened a Task Force on Diversity Education Resources. Under the leadership of Mary Kite, Chair, the Task Force compiled annotated bibliographies of teaching resources on a number of important cross-cutting issues, such as assessment, instructional resources, power and privilege, and ways to encourage students from diverse backgrounds to pursue psychology as a profession. Bibliographies also were developed for specific categories such as Race/Ethnicity, Culture, International, Language, Religion, Rural-Urban-Suburban Location. The annotated bibliography of resources includes books, book chapters, journal articles, films, Web sites, and other media. Developed for teachers of psychology at the high school, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate level, the bibliographies are now located on the Society for the Teaching of Psychology’s (APA Division Two) webpage at http://teachpsych.org/diversity/ptde/index.php. Additional bibliographies on categories of institutional support for diversity education, age, gender/sex, and sexual orientation are being developed and will be posted to the website upon completion.

Task Force members were: Mary Kite, Ball State University, Chair, Rosemary Blieszner, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, James E. Freeman, University of Virginia, Ladonna Lewis, Glendale Community College, Jeffery Scott Mio, California State Polytechnic University, Konjit V. Page, Boston College, Marissa M. Sarabando, Memorial High School, McAllen, Texas, Linda M. Woolf, Webster University

The Committee on Division/APA Relations (CODAPAR) provides the following information to division officers to increase the awareness of and opportunity for division input to governance issues that are on the current agendas of APA boards and committees. Divisions are invited to comment on these items. Summary statements for each item appear below, along with a list of the APA boards and committees to which the item was referred. The board or committee appearing in bold has been designated lead group for the item. Division comments on each item should be directed to the lead board or committee at the APA address.

The board/committee acronyms used in the listing are:

New Positions and Projects within Society of Counseling Psychology (Division 17) Organizational Structure Enhance Outreach Efforts to Community

We have developed several new positions within our organizational structure to enhance our outreach efforts and further develop our connections to the larger community. First, we have appointed Dr. Sharon Bowman, Dept Chair, Ball State University, as our Coordinator of Emergency Response. Sharon was part of a group of counseling psychologists who responded to the aftermath of Katrina. Our involvement with Katrina made us realize we wanted a point person from within Division 17 to organize our response to future natural and other disasters. Another new position is the Chair of the Committee on Community Engagement. This committee was created after Bill Parham’s very successful Presidential Project focused on getting counseling psychologists actively involved in giving back to the communities where we hold APA conventions. Dr. Rebecca Toporek, a faculty member at San Francisco State University, is chairing this committee. Rebecca previously chaired the outreach efforts to communities by counseling psychologists in New Orleans and San Francisco and is currently working with the committee to develop outreach efforts for Boston this coming August. A third new position is the PR/Media Relations Coordinator. Drs. Heidi Zetzer, Director of the UCSB Hosford Counseling & Psychological Services Clinic and Camille DeBell, a faculty member at Regis University, are the inaugural co-coordinators in this position. They are currently working on developing media connections in Chicago for coverage of the many symposia that are part of the 2008 International Counseling Psychology Conference. All three of these positions allow the Society to have a more substantial presence as psychologists in our communities with our research knowledge, teaching skills and clinical expertise. If you would like more information about these community outreach efforts, please contact Dr. Julia Phillips, Vice President for Communications via Email.

APA/ABA Cosponsored Conference – April 30-May3

Come to the Windy City on April 30–May 3, 2008 when the APA will join with the American Bar Association (ABA) to address current trends and cutting edge issues at an APA/ABA-sponsored conference, Reconceptualizing Child Custody: Past, Present and Future – Lawyers and Psychologists Working Together. Back by request, this interdisciplinary conference, which is a follow-up to the highly successful 1997 APA/ABA Los Angeles “child custody” conference, will be held at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile Hotel. The conference is organized around three primary areas:

  • The status of marriage, separation, divorce, parenting, and custody in the United Sates today
  • Legal and psychological issues relevant to contested custody cases
  • Effective legal and psychological interventions for families

Psychologists and family lawyers often are confronted with issues of mutual concern, including working with high-conflict families; participating in custody evaluations; relocation; representation of children; and allegations of alienation, sexual abuse, and domestic violence. This conference will provide the groundwork to allow the sharing of ideas, strategies, and other information between the two professions. The APA/ABA Conference has been designed to maximize your opportunity to explore the relationship of psychology to the legal system in the child custody context, and to do so in an educational setting guided by experts from both professions. The APA and the ABA Section of Family Law have brought together some of the most prominent psychologists, attorneys and judges from across the country to address a variety of topics presented within the context of 34 sessions to span three full days. Most sessions include at least two expert speakers – one attorney and one psychologist - to offer a full perspective on legal and psychological issues affecting child custody. Planned activities include a mock hearing involving expert psychological testimony with responses from judges and the audience; as well as a number of opportunities for networking, such as an April 30th Welcome Reception and a ticketed social event at the Art Institute of Chicago. The culmination of the program will be an examination of trends for the future.

Based on the 1997 Los Angeles APA-ABA conference on the same topics, a sell-out attendance of more than 700 attorneys and psychologists from around the country is anticipated. This type of conference does not come around very often. Do not miss your opportunity to gain knowledge from the experts, stay on top of current developments, network with peers, gain CE and CLE credits, and walk away with practice skills to help you apply what you learn.

For an overview of the conference as well as registration information, go to www.apa.org/conf/apaabaconf08.html.
