Committee on Accreditation Calls for Comment

The Committee on Accreditation (CoA) is in the process of making changes to its Accreditation Operating Procedures (AOP). These changes are being made to improve the quality of the AOP and ensure continued compliance with the U.S. Department of Education’s standards for recognition of accrediting agencies. Ultimately, the proposed changes aim to improve the quality of education and training in professional psychology.

In accordance with the APA “Policies for Accreditation Governance,” the CoA will make the proposed changes available for a 6-month period of public review and comment. The public comment period is scheduled to begin in March 2004 and continue through September 2004. In an effort to promote thoughtful discussion, the CoA is providing an electronic-based comment form. All comments and other information, including the users’ identity, will be public. Additional background information, instructions for making comment, and the comment form are available at http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/.

For more information, contact Susan Zlotlow in Program Consultation and Accreditation at the APA address, by phone at (+1/202) 336-5979 or by email .

Press Release: Education and Training Guidelines

At its February 2004 meeting, the APA Council of Representatives adopted as APA policy, the document Developing and Evaluating Standards and Guidelines related to Education and Training in Psychology: Context, Procedures, Criteria, and Format. The APA’s Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) will serve as the governance body responsible for coordinating the review of documents, and ensuring that all documents submitted meet the provisions of APA Association Rules governing standards and guidelines.

The APA’s Board of Educational Affairs (BEA) will begin to review and evaluate current and proposed documents related to proposed standards and guidelines for education and training in psychology immediately. APA divisions, boards and committees, task forces, and other related organizations are encouraged to review the document, available at the APA Education Directorate website, http://www.apa.org/ed/.

Copies of the document can also be obtained from Joan Freund, Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Education and Training, Education Directorate, at the APA address.
