Committee on Early Career Psychologist Applauds Divisions Support of Early Career Leadership!!!

The Committee on Early Career Psychologists (CECP) has been working on assisting divisions in increasing early career psychologist representation on their boards and we want to recognize those divisions that have appointed an early career representative to the Early Career Psychologist Network (ECPN). Those divisions are: 2, 5, 9, 13, 14, 17, 20, 21, 24, 36, 37, 39, 40, 42, 44, 50, 52 and 55. The CECP applauds these divisions on their support of early career psychologists in governance. As a reminder, the ECPN is a group of division and state early career leaders appointed by their respective executive committees to allow them a forum to discuss priorities and programming ideas, share strategies to increase recruitment, retention, and involvement of early career psychologists in professional associations, provide feedback on CECP initiatives and activities, foster collaboration between APA Divisions and State, Provincial and Territorial Psychological Associations (SPTAs)and disseminate information about opportunities and resources for early career psychologists.

The CECP recognizes that appointing a new member to your executive committee is sometimes a difficult task that may requires bylaws changes or voting on by membership. However, appointing a representative to the ECPN is not a difficult task. Although we would prefer that the representative is a voting member of your committee this can be built over time. There are a lot of divisions participating in addressing the specific needs of early career psychologists and the CECP would be happy to help you and your division with this. It has been determined that early career psychologists make up 30% of APA membership so this is a group that divisions need to pay attention to. Please contact us via Email for questions about increasing the leadership of early careers in your division or to join to ECPN.

Additionally, the early career section of APA’s website has become a great resource for the early career members in your division. We have now added several resources that are poignant to early career psychologists. On our site you can find information on licensure and advocating for licensure change, financial planning, life/career balance, and networking and soon to include much more. Most resources are available for download straight from the website. Please visit us at www.apa.org/earlycareer/ and forward this website to your division members.

As always the CECP welcomes your concerns, questions, suggestions and ideas. We are happy to work with any division on issues related to early career psychologists. Please keep this in mind when submitting proposals for APA convention and we look forward to hearing from you!

2007 Division Leadership Conference

The Committee on Division / APA Relations (CODAPAR), is proud to announce that the 2007 Division Leadership Conference will be held January 19-21, at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington D.C.

During this weekend, participants will (a) learn the nuts and bolts of leading their division, (b) be encouraged to engage in long-range and strategic planning for their presidential year, and (c) be provided with opportunities to foster interdivisional collaborative ventures.

The conference begins with a Welcome Reception at 6:00 P.M. on Friday, January 19. Following the reception, there will be a presentation on “Membership Trends and Divisions,” which is intended to spark interesting discussions during the Welcome Dinner and set the tone for this leadership training weekend.

The conference officially opens on Saturday, January 20 at 8:30 A.M. with the Welcome Address from APA President, Sharon Stephens Brehm, PhD. Throughout the day there will be presentations on APA Directorates and their functions, the nuts and bolts of APA, governance issues, as well as a special membership recruitment workshop and a ‘best practices’ plenary that will tie all this important information together.

Early Sunday morning, members of APA’s media and legal staff will be available for one-on-one consultations. Sunday morning’s plenary session will be an in-depth look at media and legal responsibilities. Later in the morning, APA Chief Executive Officer, Norman B. Anderson, PhD, will present an update on current APA activities, and the newly elected APA President-Elect will discuss his or her presidential initiatives for 2008. Following these presentations will be a Town Hall Meeting for participants to ask questions and interact with the C.E.O. and President-Elect. The DLC will conclude at approximately 11:30 A.M.

We strongly encourage divisions to send at least one representative to the 2007 DLC. It will be a weekend of information sharing and knowledge gathering and will provide opportunities tp build relationships with other division leaders.
