ALERT To Division Leaders

The IRS has recently made significant changes to the tax reporting required of non-profit organizations, and APA Divisions are now required to certify compliance with certain good governance policies as part of their group tax return.

Division leaders should be aware that APA policies on Conflict of Interest, Whistle Blower and Document Retention apply to the Divisions, and should be complied with at all times. For further information, and copies of these policies, see www.apa.org/about/division/divofficers.html, under the heading Information for Division Governing Bodies.

About Nashville

  • “Many movies have been made about Nashville. Enough books about Music City have been written to fill a bookcase. And, of course, scores of songs are dedicated to the city of music. But, while music is the lifeblood of Nashville, visitors will also find here a city of culture and history, of haute cuisine, of pro sports, outstanding academics, natural beauty and pure Southern charm. Nashville is a place where the past and the future peacefully coexist and build, one on the other, to create a destination that appeals to the interests of every visitor. This city is alive. You can feel its pulse when you walk down its sidewalks. And, fortunately, you can also hear it almost anywhere you go.” (from the Nashville Convention & Visitor’s Bureau website)
  • To read more about why you need to visit, here’s a good place to start: www.visitmusiccity.com/visitors/accolades_honors .
  • We think we have put together a terrific conference, we need your help to move the national RxP agenda forward, and we very much look forward to being your hosts at a conference which we plan to be a “don’t-miss-it” event!

Here’s hoping to see you all in Nashville in February!

    2009 Division Leadership Conference

The Committee on Division / APA Relations (CODAPAR), announces its 2009 Division Leadership Conference, being held January 23-25, at the Fairmont Washington DC Hotel and Resort.

During this weekend, division presidents-elect will (a) learn the nuts and bolts of leading their division, (b) be encouraged to engage in long-range and strategic planning for their presidential year, and (c) be provided with opportunities to foster interdivisional collaborative ventures.

The conference begins with a Welcome Reception and Dinner on Friday, January 23. APA President-Elect, James H. Bray, PhD, has been invited to officially open the DLC with a Welcome Address. Following Dr. Bray’s welcome, there will be an “Introduction to CODAPAR and the DLC” presentation which is intended to explain the functions and role of the committee and how CODAPAR assists divisions. The presentation will walk attendees through the program to help them better understand the purpose and goals set for the weekend.

Saturday’s morning sessions will focus on “getting to know APA” and the afternoon sessions will shift to “getting to know divisions”. We are also excited to have Sandra L. Shullman, PhD, speak on leadership strategies and getting involved in APA. APA Chief Executive Officer, Norman B. Anderson, PhD, will give an update on current APA activities as well as an overview of the Association, the directorates and their functions. Breakout sessions featuring an inside look at APA governance and the Education, Practice, Public Interest and Science Directorates will Saturday morning’s sessions.

Saturday afternoon will focus on division matters with plenary sessions on membership issues, updates from the APA web redesign and re-launch and a look at awards programs from American Psychological Foundation (APF) and the Interdivisional Grant Program. The key session of the afternoon will be the “Nuts and Bolts” Fair that will provide attendees with the fundamental resources to make their term in office a success.

Hot topics for division officers will be Sunday morning’s focus. The morning plenary session will be an engaging presentation on membership trends and best practices for member recruitment. We will also take an in-depth look at the legal responsibilities of a division president and the legal services available to divisions. The final session of the morning will focus on working with the media, preparing for media interviews and getting the word out about your division.

Fully 93% of recent attendees strongly recommended that incoming division presidents-elect should attend the DLC. It promises to be a weekend of information sharing and knowledge gathering that will jump-start your presidential initiatives, make you aware of resources in APA Central Office and activities that carry liability, and give you opportunities to build relationships with other division leaders. Don’t leave your division unrepresented. If the president-elect of your division is unable to participate in the DLC, we ask that your division chooses another representative from your executive board to attend.
