DSRN Mission Statement

Established to create a nexus between APA Divisions and student leaders, the Division Student Representative Network (DSRN) provides a forum for student representatives to discuss the challenges of recruiting student members, while building leadership skills within each division. The Division Student Representative Network (DSRN) has created the following formal mission statement:

Student leadership within APA Divisions and APAGS is of strategic benefit to the APA organization as a whole. Strong student leaders involved throughout the organizational structure promote and build a strong future professional membership base. Student participation in leadership positions facilitates leadership skill development such that when these students are eligible for full membership they will be better prepared to become the APA leaders of the future. Thus, there shall be an American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) Division Student Representative Network (DSRN) whose mission shall be to:

  • Promote student leadership within APA divisions;
  • Connect the student leaders of APA divisions with APAGS and with each other;
  • Provide a forum to address the challenges involved in student leadership while aiding in the development of leadership skills;
  • Focus on student specific issues such as how divisions can better serve their student members and collaborate with APAGS; and
  • Provide a unifying framework and standard procedural recommendations to divisions so that student leadership is most effectively utilized.

Apply for the Outstanding State Association Award

APAGS seeks nominations from students for the 2007 Outstanding State, Provincial or Territorial Psychological Association of the Year Award. APAGS, APA’s Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice (CAPP) and Div. 31 (State Psychological Association Affairs), present this $1,500 award each year to a state, provincial or territorial psychological association (SPTA) that has demonstrated exemplary commitment to promoting graduate student development and joint APAGS/SPTA membership. The application deadline is Jan. 15. SPTAs that have won the award within the last five years, including last year’s winner--the New York State Psychological Association--are not eligible for the 2007 award. For application requirements and instructions, visit www.apa.org/apags/members/schawrds.html.

Leadership Opportunities in APAGS

Develop leadership skills, represent student colleagues and advocate nationally for psychology by serving in an elected position on the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) Committee. APAGS members are eligible to run for one of the following elected positions, which begin in August 2007: Chair-Elect, Member at Large - Education Focus, and Member at Large – Communications Focus. APAGS is also accepting applications for the Chair of the APAGS Convention Committee. The application deadline for these leadership positions is Feb. 16. Applicants must be APAGS members and actively enrolled as students and in good standing in a graduate psychology program. For detailed position descriptions and information on how to apply, visit www.apa.org/apags.

Students: Present at the 2007 APA Convention

The 115th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association will take place in San Francisco, CA from August 17-20, 2007. That might seem far off, but now is the time to think about presenting your work at this prestigious event! By presenting your work at the APA convention, you will not only gain valuable knowledge and professional contacts, but also professional experience unlike any other available to most graduate students. APAGS follows APA rules for submissions, so if you plan on presenting at APA or other major conferences in the future, this is a great way to learn the process and refine your skills. Materials must be received in the APA Central Office by December 1, 2006 to be considered. Visit www.apa.org/apags/convention/homepage.html for additional information.

Apply for a Spring 2007 CEMA Grant!

APAGS-CEMA awards up to two $500 grants for each Spring Semester, and up to three $500 grants each Fall Semester for projects that recruit, retain, and/or enhance the training of ethnic minority graduate psychology students. Examples include, but are not limited to: workshops, conferences, speaker series, mentorship programs, and the development of student organizations with a focus on multiculturalism or ethnic minority concerns. Visit www.apa.org/apags/members/schawrds.html for details. Applications for the Spring 2007 Grants are due December 1, 2006.
