Call for Nominations: Committee on Socioeconomic Status
The APA Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest (BAPPI) is pleased to invite nominations for membership on the new continuing committee, the Committee on Socioeconomic Status (SES). BAPPI seeks nominations from APA Committees, Boards, and Divisions, as well as self-nominations.
Mission. The mission of the Committee on SES is to further the major purpose of the APA – “to advance psychology as a science and a profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare”—by ensuring that issues of SES receive the full attention of the Association. The Committee will identify and act as a catalyst in the Association’s efforts to address issues of SES and promote appropriate attention to SES in psychological research and practice. In this regard, the Committee shall: (a) collect information and documentation concerning SES; (b) promote scientific understanding of the roles of poverty and SES in health, education, and human welfare; (c) develop approaches to the application of psychology that take into account the effects of SES on psychological development and well being; and (d) advocate for social policy that will alleviate or reduce the disparities between SES groups.
Terms and Membership for Committee on SES. The Committee on SES will be a six-member Committee reporting through BAPPI. Terms of membership will commence January 1, 2007. Because this is the first appointment of Committee on SES members, two of the six members will be appointed for a 1-year term, two for a 2-year term, and three for a 3-year term to be determined by BAPPI during its November 2006 meeting. By 2009, all six members will be on a regular 3-year term rotation.
Participation on the Committee will include two, 2 ˝ day meetings during the APA Spring and Fall Consolidated Meetings in Washington DC, participation in conference calls, and work on projects between meetings. Committee members cannot serve simultaneously on another APA standing or continuing board or committee.
As per Council’s action, three of the seats on the Committee on SES will be filled by a representative from the Education, Science, and Practice constituencies. The Boards of Educational Affairs (BEA), Scientific Affairs (BSA), and Professional Affairs (BPA) will be asked, in a separate memorandum, to submit a list of nominees for consideration.
BAPPI is seeking nominees who have expertise in psychological issues related to public health, social class and SES inequalities; have conducted research that aided in the scientific understanding of the roles of SES/social class in psychology; have developed approaches to the application of psychology taking into account the effects of SES on psychological development and well-being in children and/or adults.
Nomination materials. For each nominee, please submit the following:
- Confirmation of the individual’s acceptance of the nomination
- Curriculum Vitae
- Rationale for each nomination.
Please send all nominations’ information to Christine Cubby, Public Interest Directorate, at the APA Address. Electronic submissions are encouraged and may be sent to Christine. Please note that nominators of other individuals are responsible for ensuring that the materials are submitted by Friday, September 22, 2006. If you have any questions, please contact Chris at (+1/202) 336-6156 or via Email.
2007 - Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) Leadership Awards
The APA Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) invites nominations for its annual Leadership Awards. These awards demonstrate CWP’s commitment to ensuring that women receive equity both within psychology and as consumers of psychological services, and that issues pertaining to women are kept at the forefront of psychological research, education, training, and practice.
Nominees will be identified as “emerging” or “distinguished” leaders in one or more areas of influence: service provision, scholarship, public interest, and service in psychology. Emerging leaders are psychologists who have received their doctorate within the past 15 years, have made a substantial contribution to women in psychology and show promise of an extensive, influential career. Distinguished leaders are psychologists who have worked for 15 years or more after receiving their doctorate. They should have a longstanding influence on women’s issues and status and should be recognized leaders in their area of expertise.
All nominations must include a brief statement of support for the nominee (500-word maximum), a current vita, and three letters of reference. Reference letters should address the nominees’ leadership activities, contributions, and scope of influence that advance knowledge for and about women, foster understanding of women’s lives, and improve the status of women and underrepresented populations of women in psychology and society.
Current CWP members, members of APA’s Board of Directors, individuals who have announced candidacy for APA President, and APA staff are not eligible. CWP members cannot make nominations. Award recipients, selected by CWP in March, will be announced at the 2007 APA Convention.
Nominations and supporting materials must be received by January 31, 2007. Send nominations materials to: Gabe Twose, Women's Programs Office, at the APA Address or via Email.

Call for Nominations to the Committee on Women in Psychology
The American Psychological Association's Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) is seeking nominations for two new members to begin terms in January 2007. The committee functions as a catalyst by interacting with and making recommendations to the various parts of the APA governing structure, the APA membership, and the Society for the Psychology of Women, as well as other relevant groups. The committee also collects and disseminates information concerning the status of women and develops the means by which the participation of women in roles and functions of the profession could be increased.
Committee members plan, develop, and coordinate various activities regarding the status of women. CWP current strategic goals include promoting the health and well-being of all women; identifying and eliminating discriminatory and exploitive practices against all women; promoting the unique contributions of women to psychology; enhancing women’s leadership within and outside of APA; monitoring activities of groups within the APA to assess the impact on women; collaborating with others as needed to achieve the empowerment of underrepresented groups; and promoting advocacy on public policy relevant to women.
The committee is interested in persons with demonstrated interest and experience in women's issues to serve a 3-year term from January 2007 through December 2009. For this term, CWP seeks one member actively involved in public policy issues (experience in international policy also welcome). To fulfill the committee’s commitment to full diversity in representation, at least one of the slates should be filled by a person of color. CWP also encourages applications from individuals either with a disability or with expertise in disability issues. Letters of nomination should clearly describe the candidate's specific qualifications relative to these criteria. Nominees to CWP must be full members of APA.
CWP members are required to attend two committee meetings each year in Washington, DC with expenses reimbursed by the APA. Candidates should ensure they can attend all committee meetings. In 2007, the meetings will be March 23-25 and September 28-30. Committee members also work on CWP priorities between meetings and will be expected to participate in regular committee conference calls. Because CWP sponsors a number of important events at the APA convention (e.g., the annual CWP Network meeting, presentation of the CWP Leadership Awards), CWP members are strongly encouraged to attend APA convention events if possible, though expenses cannot be reimbursed.
Nomination materials should include a letter from the nominee indicating willingness to serve on CWP, a brief statement of the nominee's qualifications, and a current curriculum vita. Self-nominations are encouraged. APA nominations are open to members who are retired, are employed less than full time, or work full time. Nominations and supporting materials should be sent by September 3, 2006, to Gabe Twose, APA Women's Programs Office, at the APA Address or via Email.
