An Expanded Role for Psychologists:
Post 9/11 Healing and Programs
The Society for the Study for Peace, Conflict and Violence, Division 48 Peace Psychology, especially our officers, have been involved and dedicated to providing expert input into local community groups as well as national and international forums in regard to peacebuilding practices. In addition to these efforts many of the officers of the Division 48 family have been engaging in consulting work in Interfaith councils and
dialogues which are occurring both on local and national levels. As a byproduct of these efforts several programs will be presented at Chicago involving psychology’s response to September 11 and the deep-rooted difficulties in the Middle East. For example, on Friday, August 23 there are sessions involving: “Fundamentalism, terrorism and psychology’s
response to September 11"; “Intergroup forgiveness in
settings of ethnic conflict: international perspectives”; and “Global perspectives on violence, non-violence,
reconciliation and recovery.” On Saturday August 24 we are offering sessions on: “Symposium-’Promoting commonalties of religious identity as a way to peace” with representatives and practitioners from the international community. On Sunday, August 25 we are presenting a Symposium on: “Breaking the violence-retaliation cycles: roles for peaceworkers. ”On this day as well a special invited address will take place as a result of the presentation of Division 48’s Morton Deutsch Award to an internationally loved and renowned Peace practitioner and scholar Johan Galtung. Right after this event there will be a
roundtable discussion: “APA presidents explore psychology’s contribution to politics and global security ”involving APA presidents-Florence Denmark, Bill McKeachie, Patrick DeLeon, and Bob Perloff. The ongoing efforts of our officers and members help forge a new and peaceful force, which can and will have an effect in our global community today! We look forward to sharing this experience with all that are interested. If you have any questions or interest in joining our Division please contact Steve Handwerker, Membership Chair by email or at 7300 W Camino Real, Suite 229, Boca Raton FL 33433.
Society of Consulting Psychology
Moves Newsletter On-line
By Steve Gravenkemper, PhD, e-Update Editor,
Society of Consulting Psychology
After receiving notice of this new online publication, I wrote to Dr. Gravenkemper to compliment him on the first issue of the Division 13 online newsletter e-Update. I also asked him if he would share his experiences in developing the newsletter with other divisions. He graciously accepted the assignment. What follows is a brief summary of the editor’s experiences in creating this new online publication…S.J.
The Society of Consulting Psychology (Division 13) has successfully moved exclusively to an on-line newsletter format, entitled e-Update. Steve Gravenkemper, PhD, as editor of e-Update, and Steve Kincaid, PhD, the Society’s Webmaster, were pleased by the enthusiastic response by members to this new format. The emphasis of the latest edition was to produce a “member-focused” newsletter that communicates key Society of Consulting Psychology information and serves as a resource on important consulting issues.
In executing this plan, we created a new series of articles entitled Spotlight on Consulting Issues. Utilizing a “member-speaking-to-member” format these articles are crafted by 1) inviting members via our ListServ to respond to questions related to selected consulting topics; or 2) selecting
members to be interviewed and then compiling these
responses in an article format. The two most recent articles, “Consulting with CEOs” and “E-Consulting: Current and future trends in organizational consulting”, have been very popular with members. These articles have proven to be a rich resource of information as they share the wisdom of the many talented members of the Society. We have created an archive of these Spotlight articles for our members, including the first article entitled, “Building and growing a consulting practice”. In this way, we are building a growing on-line library of articles on consulting topics for current and new members as they join the Society.
For the first time we were able to publish the program schedule of the Society of Consulting Psychology’s
Mid-Winter Conference in San Antonio to provide a preview of the contents of this popular conference for our members. In the most recent edition we published the Society’s APA program schedule for Chicago this summer. In our next issues we will feature the next Mid-Winter Conference, to be held in Scottsdale, Arizona, January 30th through February 2nd, 2003. With the most recent newsletter, we have invited our members to send the link to the newsletter to other APA friends to spread the exciting news of what is happening within the Society.
Our Webmaster, Steve Kincaid, has created an appealing and colorful presentation of the newsletter, which has consistently praised by those who visit the newsletter site. This format includes links to key features in the newsletter to creation easy navigation by members. Steve Gravenkemper and Steve Kincaid have sought to create an entertaining and informative read for Society of Consulting Psychology members. So far, we have received an enthusiastic, “Two thumbs way up!!!” response from the Society’s membership.
Preparing members for the shift on-line: Shortly after Rodney Lowman, PhD, the current President of the Society of Consulting Psychology decided to shift the newsletter to an on-line version, a strategy was developed to transition members from the traditional print version to the on-line edition. The intent was transition members in a manner in which everyone was informed well in advance of the change and to create a sense of excitement and intrigue regarding the new format.
In December 2001, we published two versions of the newsletter. One was a traditional print version. In this print edition, we announced that the newsletter would be moving exclusively to an on-line format in the spring of 2002. In addition, we launched a beta test of the first on-line
newsletter. We included instructions in the print version to access the web-based newsletter. As encouragement for members to look at the on-line newsletter, we included “bonus content” that was not part of the print version. This “bonus content” included the first Spotlight article, “Building and growing a consulting practice” and a preview of the program schedule for the Mid-Winter conference of the Society to take place that February.
At the Mid-Winter conference in February, specially formatted print versions of the on-line newsletter were put on display at the registration desk to generate interest. Post card announcement proclaimed the publishing of the first
on-line newsletter and provided on-line directions to the newsletter site. Finally, thirty copies of the first Spotlight article were displayed for members to take with them. These copies disappeared within the first twenty-four hours of the conference.
Next, we turned out attention to the Society of Consulting Psychology’s ListServ for members as time drew near for the publishing of the Spring on-line newsletter. Keeping within the spirit of being light-hearted, yet provocative, we sent out an e-mail two weeks prior to publishing the
newsletter. This e-mail was bold in that it modeled itself after a blockbuster movie review, complete with enthusiastic and entertaining “quotes” from fictional sources. A week later we sent out another “teaser” e-mail, describing the three main features of the newsletter. Coincidentally we were able to capitalize on a recent Fortune Magazine publication, which addressed three similar issues. We compared and contrasted these Fortune articles with the e-Update articles. Finally, we sent a “sneak preview” e-mail complete with a direct link to the newsletter on the first day of its publication, June 3rd.
Simultaneously, we had mailed post card to all Society of Consulting Psychology members announcing that the newsletter had moved…on-line. This post card provided directions to the on-line newsletter, as well as listing the three main feature content pieces. Imbedded in the text of the post card was the phrase: “Amberg, Peairs, Somerville & Vandaveer sizzle in their on-line debut”. This quote was intended to heighten the interest in the “Consulting with CEOs” article, as Bill Amberg, PhD, Dick Peairs, Kevin Somerville, PhD and Vicki Vandaveer, PhD are distinguished and talented members of the Society of Consulting Psychology who are widely respected.
Following this process, we experienced a 65% increase in the number of “hits” on the second edition (June 3rd) over the first edition in the fall of 2001. Consequently, we feel that we were successful in: a) publicizing the newsletter, and b) generating a sense of excitement within the Society regarding e-Update.
Looking forward: Connecting with members and building a two-way dialogue: One of the goals of the on-line newsletter is to connect with our members and create a two-way dialogue. Early efforts have proven to be successful. We received feedback from members during the first week of publication. This feedback validated that they viewed
e-Update as a resource for both Society of Consulting Psychology and important consulting needs. In addition, our first Spotlight article was organic and dynamic. The article was built based upon an initial response to three questions to our ListServ membership. Members were invited to add comments to this article even after the initial launch.
Future possibilities include attaching a membership survey to the newsletter, including a letters to the editor section and continuing to use on-line member response to guide the direction and to write articles of interest.
Invitation to view the Society of Consulting Psychology’s
e-Update: We invite you to take a look at e-Update using the following two-step process:
1) Enter www.apa.org/divisions/div13 in your web address window.
2) This takes you to the Society’s web page. Once here, simply click on the e-Update icon at the top of the web page that will take you to the latest edition of our on-line newsletter.
Send us an e-mail to tell us what you think! We are excited about the possibilities and feel we have just begun to scratch the surface in exploring ways to build a sense of community within the Society of Consulting Psychology.
