By:
Cynthia D. Belar, PhD,
Executive Director, APA Education Directorate and Nina G. Levitt,
EdD, Director, Education Policy, APA Public Policy Office
WHAT?
The Annual APA Education Advocacy Breakfast Meeting and Presentation:
“Fighting for Graduate Psychology Education Funding: Surviving the
Annual Appropriations Battle”
WHEN?
Saturday, August 9th (7:30–9:00 AM)
WHERE?
APA Convention in Toronto—Fairmont Royal York Hotel (Confederation
Rooms 5&6)
Continuing
resolutions, budget caps, special projects, soft and hard earmarks—what
do these things have to do with psychology? Everything. All federal grant
programs, such as the Bureau of Health Professions’ Graduate Psychology
Education (GPE) program, must survive the annual appropriations battles
in Congress. Every year, 13 appropriations bills must be passed (one way
or another) by Congress, and this includes the Labor, Health, Human Services
and Education bill that contains the Bureau of Health Professions’
GPE Program. Those are the dry facts. But, what’s really happening
behind the scenes as Congress and the Administration battle the annual
budget and sometimes threaten to “close the government”?
Come
and find out the reality behind the headlines and sound bites. Most importantly,
find out what you can do to protect and even increase federal funding
for the GPE program. This year we are very pleased to have Evan
Knisely, Associate Vice President for Van Scoyoc Associates—one
of the top appropriations consulting firms in Washington, DC—as
our keynote presenter for the annual breakfast meeting. Sharing fascinating
stories from “behind the scenes,” Mr. Knisely will not only
explain how the annual process really works and how difficult it is for
psychology to get a “win”—but why it’s the biggest
game in town and how you can help us keep our place at the table!
As always,
the breakfast is free and open to members of the Education Advocacy Grassroots
Network, and all other interested individuals. Because we anticipate a
large turnout, please be sure to RSVP not later than Friday, August
1st.
Again, we sincerely hope that you will be able to join us for the breakfast
meeting. As you know, the annual meeting not only enables us to share
information directly with you, but also gives us an opportunity to gather
important feedback and support from psychologists in the field.
As noted
above, in order to ensure adequate room and catering arrangements, please
RSVP by Friday, August 1st, either by email
or phone (202-312-6483).
Thanks
so very much for your prompt reply—we look forward to seeing you
in Toronto!

New Proficiencies
Recognized, Specialty Reaffirmed
Upon the recommendation
of the Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies
in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP), the Council of Representatives of
the American Psychological Association at the February 2003 meeting recognized
Sport Psychology and the Assessment and Treatment of Serious Mental Illness
as proficiencies in professional psychology. In addition, the Council
reaffirmed recognition of Industrial and Organizational Psychology as
a specialty in professional psychology.
The present policies
and procedures of the Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and
Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP) require that each proficiency
and specialty approved in February 2003 reapply for continued
recognition on or before February 2010.
The Commission for
the Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology
(CRSPPP) was pleased to recommend and facilitate this process for approval
and recognition. For more information about CRSPPP, the recognition process,
and a listing and description of other recognized specialties and proficiencies,
visit the website at http://www.apa.org/crsppp
or contact the Office of Graduate and Postgraduate Education and Training

Committee
on Accreditation’s Convention Open Forum
The Board of Education
Affairs (BEA) allocated two hours to the Committee on Accreditation (CoA)
to hold a public forum on accreditation issues at the 2003 APA Convention
in Toronto, Canada. The session, entitled: Open Forum on Accreditation:
Emerging Substantive Areas will include a 20-30 minute presentation by
CoA representatives, after which comments and questions will be taken
from the audience. Audience members are not required to register in advance
to observe the forum, however, those wishing to comment or pose a question
at the forum must sign up in advance. To do so, please send an email to
Committee on Accreditation, indicating:
(1) your name; (2) the group, if any, that you represent; and (3) your
specific comment or question. Advance sign up will be made available until
July 21, 2003.
In an effort to make
the forum most efficient, a designated speaker at the forum will be responsible
for reading those comments and questions submitted in advance and in the
appropriate format. If time permits, additional comments and questions
will be taken from audience members.
Further information
on the forum will be posted online prior to convention at http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation/.
Please contact the Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation at
