2011 Science Showcase
The APA Science Directorate and Convention Office invite you to submit your research for a Science Showcase, to be held at the APA Convention in Washington DC in August 2011. Up to six groups will be selected to present in-person demonstrations of their research to a general audience at the Convention Center. Demonstrations that complement the APA strategic goal of promoting psychology as a STEM discipline are encouraged, as are those that show how psychological research can translate into everyday benefits for the public.
Demonstrations will be selected based on the following criteria. They should:
be lively, highly engaging activities that challenge, captivate and stimulate the audience.
generate interaction with convention participants.
be live demonstrations, or combined live presentation with video/audio.
fit in a 30 minute presentation window with up to 15 minutes for the demonstration and the remaining time for questions and answers.
have the potential to generate media interest.
Any area of psychological science may be presented. Projects should be relatively portable, making set-up times reasonable. Non-human animals and demonstrations that require consent are not appropriate for the Showcase.
The Showcase will be presented in a central location at the Convention Center. Psychologists, students, and guests will constitute the audience. Presenters will be asked to make a total of two brief demonstrations – one on Friday, August 5, and one on Saturday, August 6.
Each group selected will receive one complimentary Convention registration and up to $1,500 support towards travel and project costs. The project designated as “Best Demonstration” will also receive an award of $3,000. The project organizers will be recognized by the APA President at the Convention’s Opening Ceremony and their projects will be covered in the APA Monitor on Psychology.
The deadline for submissions is April 15, 2011. Required materials include the application form, curriculum vitae of project group members, a 750-word (maximum) description, and optional brief accompanying media. Please visit the Science Showcase webpage for the full program description and application form.
