Convention Highlights for Division Leaders

Here’s a list of Division-specific sessions for Division leaders to consider attending while at the APA Annual Convention

As a Division officer, you have a double duty: how to get the most of the convention for yourself, as well as how to use the time to manage Division business. Below are some highlights of the convention that you may consider adding to your schedule. 

“Finding a Home in APA—Connect, Network, Grow Through Division Participation”

This session will feature Gerald Koocher, PhD, Laura Brown, PhD, and Katherine Richmond, PhD, as they discuss opportunities for personal and professional growth through taking part in Division activities. Chairing the session will be Oksana Yakushko, PhD, (Committee on Early Career Psychologists), Larry Zelnick, PsyD, (Committee on Division/APA Relations) and Ethan Mereish, MA, (APAGS).  The session will be Friday and immediately followed by an Open House in the Division Hospitality Suite (see below).

Symposium: “APA and the Challenge of Change in the 21st Century”

Sponsored by APA’s Policy and Planning Board, this Symposium will address topics such as organizational change and succession planning. Chaired by Michael Murphy of Indiana State, the session will feature a discussion with James Prochaska, PhD, University of Rhode Island; John Dovidio, PhD, Yale University; and Judith Blanton, PhD,  RHR International.

Science Showcase

APA will host a Science showcase featuring live demonstrations. Three finalists have been selected to present their research that complements the APA strategic goal of promoting psychology as a STEM discipline and that show how psychological research can translate into everyday benefits for the public. These presentations, near the registration area of the Convention Center, are going to be live demonstrations of the research, and it promises to be a highlight of the convention. In addition, the winner of the Best Demonstration will be presented with a $3,000 award to support and promote the research.

Understanding and Developing Division Membership

Join the Division Services Office and Membership Chairs from each division as we discuss division membership trends, marketing to new members, reaching out to ECP and student members, retaining current members, and cross-divisional membership opportunities.

Division Hospitality Suite

APA Division Services and the Committee on Division/APA Relations will host a Division Hospitality Suite on Friday and Saturday to provide the opportunity for APA members who do not belong to a division to gather, meet with Division representatives, and receive information about the Division. In addition, Divisions can use this time to gather to discuss cross-division programming opportunities. If you meet potential Division members while at the convention, encourage them to come by the Suite to learn more about your Division, benefits of joining a division, and cross-divisional opportunities. To verify that your Division has a representative scheduled to attend, please contact Chad Rummel.

Immediately following the "Find a Home" session (see above), join us for a Division Open House. Meet with Division leaders, ask follow-up questions, and find out how joining a division can help you personally and professionally.

Division Services Booth

The Division Services Office will again provide a booth to help Divisions connect with current and potential members. In addition to handing out brochures to those interested in joining divisions, kiosks will be set up to allow members to get exactly what they want from the Booth. In addition, a marketing brochure featuring all APA Divisions will be available for pick-up by APA members. DSO staff will provide information on joining divisions, and anyone who joins a division during the convention will automatically be entered into a drawing to win an iPad!
