The BEA Task Force on Establishing an Award for Effective School Environments presented their survey, award criteria and plans for administering the award at the spring Consolidated meetings. After receiving input during a small breakout session, Task Force members decided to expand the award to a different geographical region each year, as opposed to a school only in the city of APA convention. This expansion will allow schools that aren’t in major urban hubs to also be considered for recognition. In addition, a monetary prize has been added and the award presentation will take place onsite at the end of the school’s academic year by a local APA member. BEA members suggested a revision to the award title, so considerations are currently being made for a name that will more appropriately convey the purpose of the award and its recognition of schools who display psychologically effective techniques to increase academic achievement.
A total of 27 alumni students have been randomly chosen to receive monetary incentive awards for completing the survey for the NSF-sponsored study on Specialized Science High Schools. The alumni came from both the control group as well as the experimental group, representing 25 specialized school models as well as 570 members of nationally recognized talent development programs. The questionnaire identified variables predicting the likelihood of completing a STEM college degree. Final analysis of the survey results is being conducted and will be written up in a series of papers and presentations during the next 6 months.
