Engage your members at APA convention

This is your chance to take advantage of many opportunities to connect with current members and also potential new members.

The APA convention is a great opportunity to connect with current members and also potential new members. In addition to sessions, business meetings and social hours, divisions will have many chances to rub elbows with members around the division booth during the 2013 meeting in Hawai‘i. There are many opportunities for divisions to engage their members at different stages, but note the deadline for many of these is June 1.

Before Convention

Post your programming for easy access.
Division leaders are encouraged to send their programs, suite schedules, and any other division information along to DSO staff by June 1. This will allow attendees to find your programming easily before and during convention. PDF files will be placed on the APA site. In early July, emails will be sent out to attendees, letting them know about these division-specific programs. Emails will be targeted to attendees with division affiliations and also to those without affiliation, spreading the word about division activities.

Target students, early career psychologists, and members.
In addition, divisions have the chance to contribute text geared to three specific groups — students, early career psychologists, and members — for booklets that will highlight what each division has to offer to each of these groups. These will be available in the division booth and at events geared to first-time convention attendees. These will also be posted on the division homepage on the APA site, so they are widely available after convention as well.

During Convention

Visit the Division Services booth.
Be sure to stop by the Division Services booth and invite others as well. The booth has not only a wealth of division information available, but also online access to division programs and suite schedules and a list of hospitality suite locations. And we always have one or more folks in the booth who can answer questions. There’s always a treat or two as well, such as our blinking stars and hearts from last year. Booth hours are as follows:

  • Tuesday, July 30, 3 p.m.-8 p.m.

  • Wednesday, July 31, 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • Thursday, Aug. 1, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

  • Friday, Aug. 2, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

  • Saturday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

  • Sunday, Aug. 4, 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

Schedule time to speak to potential new members.
Division leaders are invited to sign up for an allotment of time in the Division Services booth in order to meet and answer questions from members and candidates throughout the convention. The booth is conveniently located in the member resources area near the main convention registration which helps to increase foot traffic of interested attendees. To sign up for a time to help promote your division and division membership in general, please visit the Division Representative Sign-Up page. DSO staff will be preparing a schedule of divisions that will be in the booth in order to encourage potential members who are interested in a specific division to come by at that time to meet that division representative and ask any questions.

Make membership brochures available.
While convention can often be a busy time and it may be hard for each division to schedule a representative to devote time in the Division Services booth, the booth will have one wall-pocket devoted to each division for division-specific brochures. We invite all divisions to send 50 copies of your current brochure/application to the Division Services Office by June 1. DSO staff in the booth will be taking membership applications across the divisions and these brochures are helpful in getting information in the hands of people who want to know what your division is all about.

Easily identify your members with division ribbons.
Ordering ribbons with your division name, number or slogan for your members to display on their nametags is another option. It’s a great way to promote individual divisions, and members are proud to display their affiliations. DSO can facilitate ordering these for you when orders are placed by June 1 through this form.

Attend sessions on member engagement.

Arrange to meet with your DSO account manager.
Account managers in the Division Services Office are ready to meet with divisions or attend board meetings if your division is interested in discussing new services through DSO, ideas about how other divisions may handle certain problems, and any other questions you might have. If you’re unsure of who your DSO account manager is, email or visit the webpage.

After Convention

Tout your division’s winners in the Monitor.
Divisions have also been asked to supply their award winners for inclusion in the September issue of the Monitor on Psychology if they would like. The deadline for inclusion in the Monitor is July 1.

Share convention highlights with members. 
Sending an email to members to recap your division’s activities at convention (and including photographic proof where possible) is a great reminder for attendees of the fun and a great way to share with those members who couldn’t attend all of the division’s accomplishments.
