APA Databases
- APA PsycNET introduced a new a “Trending” feature in 2014 that highlights the most popular searches. The new feature, available on both the Easy and Advanced Search pages, shows the 5 most popular search terms. The search terms are updated on a weekly basis and are hyperlinked to allow the terms to be easily searched.
- APA upgraded usage reporting on APA PsycNET to address updates to COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources), an industry standard. In addition to reporting the number of searches and full-text downloads, APA additionally reports Result Clicks (a measure of how engaged users are by clicking to explore content after running a search) and Record Views (the quantity of abstracts or PsycINFO records that users viewed). Many libraries look at these database utilization reports to help gauge which resources to renew for their patrons.
- During 2014 an all-time high of 213,676 new records were added to the PsycINFO database. At the end of the year, PsycINFO contained 3,785,610 records and more than 74 million cited references. The number of journals covered by PsycINFO at the end of 2014 was 2,561.
- In 2014 the PsycTESTS database grew by 7,836 records, totaling 27,486 records by the end of the year. The number of unique tests to be found in PsycTESTS was 25,288, and the percentage of full-text tests was 68%. In the 3 years since its introduction, PsycTESTS has grown over 12-fold from its introductory size of 2,261 records.
- In 2014 PsycTESTS underwent its first reload, which reformats the records to include new features, enhancements, and other large scale upgrades. Included were several new fields to capture data such as Author Identifier, Instrument Type, and Factor Analysis. In addition, links to other versions of a test within PsycTESTS were provided as well as the location of a test (e.g., page, table or appendix number, etc.) within a source document.
- PsycARTICLES includes “Online First Publication” articles within 30 days after the accepted manuscripts have been received at APA, and these are designated as the “versions of record.” More than 3,100 articles were released as Online First Publication between January and December 2014, and approximately 3,200 articles “graduated” to bound issues in this same time frame.
- PsycARTICLES added six new titles and nearly 7,600 articles in 2014. The number of articles in the database totaled 185,792 at the end of the year.
- APA continued to add both classic and APA books to PsycBOOKS, including the new addition of the APA Handbooks. There are now 1,055 APA books plus 2,978 classic books on psychology in the database. At the end of the year, PsycBOOKS contained 4,033 books and 60,203 chapters.
- The PsycEXTRA database grew by 30,412 records in 2014 and totaled 341,194 records. This database is currently undergoing re-evaluation to identify opportunities for greater utility.
- The PsycCRITIQUES database featuring book and film reviews ended the year with 41,488 records in total, having added 485 records in 2014.
- PsycINFO staff indexed approximately 6,300 website pages in 2014 for APA’s public website, www.apa.org.
- PsycINFO staff continued to expand the use of social media to inform the world about APA’s electronic databases and the APA PsycNET platform. The staff have posted regular comments on Facebook© (https://www.facebook.com/APAPsycNET) and Twitter© (http://www.twitter.com/APAPsycNET).
- By the end of 2014 staff had posted 135 training videos about APA databases to two YouTube© channels, one dedicated to APA PsycNET and the other dedicated to our vendor platforms. YouTube views of the APA database training videos jumped to an all-time high of 52,840 in 2014 – an increase of more than 41% compared to 2013. In addition, 108 podcasts walk listeners through sample searches and are available at http://www.apa.org/pubs/databases/training/.
- PsycINFO staff continued to expand the database training program with on-site training at conferences and webinars given several times a week. By the end of the year, staff had provided direct training to more than 1,137 participants, most of whom were librarians, students and APA members. The librarians represented over 900 institutions.
- In 2014, 606 participants attended the student-focused webinars on APA databases. The attendance for student sessions more than quintupled over 2013. The change is due in part to a restructuring of the student sessions into three half-hour modules, a basic, advanced, and results management session, and the creation of a new series of webinars conducted in partnership with Psi Chi. Four joint Psi Chi webinars were held in 2014 and drew 246 attendees.
- APA conducted several market research initiatives in 2014 to support the redesign of the current database delivery platform and to identify innovative revenue-generating opportunities. Valuable data was gathered from clinicians in hospital and private settings, academic and health sciences librarians, graduate students, and faculty instructors by means of contextual inquiry methods and focus groups. The user-centric market research efforts enable us to more effectively reach our goals of increasing usability and designing highly competitive products. The research data provides a solid foundation of end-user behaviors, values, information needs, workflows, and challenges. In turn, Personas developed using the research data are employed to inform the initial conceptual design phase, the technical development process, iterative user testing, and post-release feedback for continuous improvement.
- The APA Library Advisory Council met twice in 2014. Among their discussion items were the current state of the academic library; institutional directives impacting product acquisition; working with faculty; understanding academic personas; working with campus writing centers; use of altmetrics; use of video in teaching; administering electronic resources; and the academic perception of APA as a brand. Council members have provided P&C staff with vital input regarding product features, pricing strategies, training and education, institutional trends, and policies regarding usage of electronic products.
- APA presented Frederick Andrew Lerner, MS, DLS, recently retired from the National Center for PTSD, with the 2014 APA Award for Excellence in Librarianship. Dr. Lerner has made unparalleled contributions to the field of traumatic stress research by developing a bibliographic resource that is used by researchers, clinicians, and policymakers worldwide, and by assembling the world’s largest specialized collection of traumatic stress literature, the Published International Literature on Traumatic Stress (PILOTS) Database.
