National Health Service Corps Announces Increase in Loan Repayment Funding — April 2011
The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program (LPR) has raised its funding rates for service at approved Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) sites. Funding is now $145,000 for two to seven years of service, compared with original funding at $60,000 for two years of service. The breakdown of funding is as follows:
First Two Years: Up to $60,000
Third Year: Up to $35,000
Fourth Year: Up to $35,000
Fifth Year: Up to $20,000
Sixth Year: Up to $20,000
Seventh Year and Beyond: Up to $15,000
Currently there is a great need for psychologists to participate in the NHSC. As of January 2010, there were more than 361 vacancies listed for clinical psychologists across the country. In order to participate in the LPR program, psychologists must find a facility or site that is 1) designated as a mental HPSA and 2) willing to hire them.
