APA coordinates important meetings on Capitol Hill around HIV/AIDS issues
On Thursday, December 15, 2011, Public Interest Government Relations Office (PI-GRO) staff accompanied APA member and preeminent HIV/AIDS researcher Dr. Marguerita Lightfoot on meetings in the offices of Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Trent Franks (R-AZ). The meetings come on the heels of APA’s endorsement of two bills related to HIV/AIDS that were recently introduced by Rep. Lee:
Status Report on the 30th Anniversary of HIV/AIDS Act (H.R. 1880): The legislation would require a status report on both the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and efforts to provide universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment internationally.
REPEAL HIV Discrimination Act (H.R. 3053): The legislation aims to reform current HIV criminalization statutes, to reduce the HIV/AIDS related stigma that undermines health initiatives focused on screening, prevention, and treatment.
In the coming months, PI-GRO will continue to champion these and other HIV/AIDS-related legislation and collaborate with members of the newly created Congressional HIV/AIDS Caucus.
