APA Activities Advance Protections for LGBT Students

On March 8, APA’s Public Interest Government Relations Office (PI-GRO) took a number of actions to advance the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) (H.R. 998/S. 555) and commemorate the 1-year anniversary of SNDA’s introduction and the White House Conference on Bullying Prevention. These activities included:

  • Distributing an action alert to members of APA’s Public Policy Advocacy Network, asking them to contact their congressional representatives and urge them to support the bill, as part of a collaborative effort with Senator Al Franken’s (D-MN) office and SNDA coalition members;
  • Creating and circulating to members of Congress a letter of support for SNDA; and
  • Joined 69 additional national and state organizations in sending a letter to President Obama that urged his administration to formally endorse SNDA

APA strongly supports SNDA, which would address the serious problem of harassment and discrimination against LGBT students by prohibiting harassment and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools that receive federal funds.
