APA promotes sexual minority research priorities with NIH
APA staff recently met with staff of the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Office of Extramural Research to discuss a recent Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health Issues and Research Gaps and Opportunities. Consistent with its written response to the IOM, APA made several recommendations to NIH, including:
Reissuing a targeted call for applications that focuses on LGBT issues;
Incorporating questions about LGBT populations in large-scale studies;
Establishing a reporting system for NIH support of LGBT research; and
Charging NIH leadership with responsibilities related to LGBT health research.
APA will continue to help foster the development of meaningful partnerships between NIH and other organizations that support NIH funding of LGBT health research.
