APA Celebrates Passage of Post-Partum Depression Legislation
Dr. Gwendolyn P. Keita, Executive Director of APA’s Public Interest Directorate, joined Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Representative Bobby Rush (D-IL), sponsors of the MOTHERS Act, in applauding the passage of the legislation on Capitol Hill in May. The legislation passed as a part of health care reform. The MOTHERS Act will increase research, education and outreach for new mothers and families suffering from postpartum depression (PPD). Up to 1 in 7 women experience PPD.
PI-GRO staff was actively involved in drafting the Melanie Blocker Stokes Post Partum Depression Research and Care Act in 2001. Since that time, APA has been instrumental in working with Congress and leading coalitions to pass the legislation.
