APA Advances Data Collection on Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation in Electronic Health Records
PI-GRO worked with the Practice and Science Directorates, the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns, and APA members to submit comments on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for Stage 2 (PDF, 7MB) of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) Incentive Program. This proposed rule would specify the Stage 2 criteria that eligible professionals, eligible hospitals, and critical access hospitals must meet in order to qualify for Medicare and/or Medicaid EHR incentive payments authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sought comments on whether to include the recording of gender identity and/or sexual orientation in EHR demographics. In the comments, APA supported collecting this demographic information because it can be put to use in addressing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health disparities.
