On October 5th, Science GRO Director, Dr. Geoff Mumford, accompanied Dr. Robert Balster and Dr. Matthew Howard to a briefing for senior staff at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).  Balster provided an overview of the behavioral pharmacology/phenomenology of inhalant use, and Howard provided an overview of inhalant use epidemiology. The briefing invitation followed a meeting Mumford organized at APA Convention to bring together the representatives of the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the Society for Research on Alcoholism, the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, Divisions 28 and 50, and the Board of Scientific Affairs, to discuss drug policy priorities with APA Fellow, Dr. Keith Humphreys, who had recently accepted the position of Senior Policy Advisor at ONDCP. After the briefing, Mumford and Balster met with ONDCP Deputy Director, Tom McLellan, to discuss a range of issues including regulatory loopholes that allow certain volatile nitrites “poppers” to be sold by retail outlets and possible remedial actions to limit their availability.
