APA Hosts Annual Friends of NIDA Meeting with NIDA Director

The meeting provided an opportunity for constituent organizations to hear recent news from NIDA and priorities for the coming year.
On September 15th, APA hosted the annual Friends of NIDA meeting providing an opportunity for constituent organizations to hear recent news from NIDA and priorities for the coming year. Dr. Nora Volkow provided an overview of how NIDA spent the $261 million in stimulus funds it received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Fifty-six percent funded grants that had been previously scored as meritorious but fell below the pay line and forty percent funded Challenge and Grand Opportunity grants.  In discussing NIDA priorities, Dr. Volkow indicated the institute will pay increasing attention to medications development, genetics and human development, HIV and substance use in the criminal justice system, and prevention.  On the latter, she cited results from a recent study of Communities That Care showing that relative to controls, eighth graders who had been enrolled in evidence-based prevention programs were a third less likely to begin using alcohol or tobacco products than controls.  NIDA continues to play a critical role in dissemination of information about substance use and Dr. Volkow also cited the release of NIDA’s new Media Guide in that effort.
