NICHD to Seek Extramural Input in Review of Scientific Opportunities

New NICHD Acting Director Alan Guttmacher discussed his plans over the coming year to begin a process to look across the broad mission of the NICHD.
Chairing his first National Advisory Child Health and Human Development Council meeting on January  28th, new NICHD Acting Director Alan Guttmacher discussed his plans over the coming year to begin a process to look across the broad mission of the NICHD and identify those areas of scientific opportunity the institute should be focused on and how the institute’s current programs are designed to leverage those opportunities. Guttmacher indicated that the extramural community would be heavily involved in this effort and a more detailed process will be outlined by the June Council meeting. While the President has proposed freezing all non-defense, discretionary spending, Guttmacher also clarified that while this would constrain overall program budgets, it may include a modest increases for the National Institutes of Health.  President Obama’s FY11 Budget Request will be released on Monday, February 1st.
