APA and Sesame Workshop Team Up for Military Families on the Hill

Representatives from APA and Sesame Workshop met with Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) who sits on the House Armed Services Committee, to discuss collaborative efforts to support military personnel and their families.
On May 4, Science GRO’s Heather Kelly and Public Interest GRO’s Diane Elmore brought a representative of Sesame Workshop to meet with Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) and discuss collaborative efforts to support the Congressman’s large constituency of military personnel and their families. Rep. Jones, who sits on the House Armed Services Committee and whose North Carolina district includes Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune, is committed to helping military families cope with the challenges of military life. He was particularly interested in working with Sesame Workshop, which sponsors a program called “Talk, Listen, Connect” to help families during military deployment, throughout homecoming when parents may return “different,” and in the grieving process if parents have been killed in military engagement (psychologists have been involved as advisors and consultants on the project). Rep. Jones also encouraged APA to continue working with his staff on legislation drafted by Public Interest GRO and Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-CA) office to aid families in which both parents are military personnel in the event that dual deployments arise.
