Governing body for comparative effectiveness research institute announced

The General Accounting Office announced appointments to the Board of Governors of the new Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute

On September 23, the General Accounting Office announced appointments to the Board of Governors of the new Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), which will oversee an independent, nonprofit comparative effectiveness research enterprise. While none of APA’s nominees were appointed, the Board does include at least one mental health professional, Dr. Grayson Norquist, Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

APA had expressed concern to GAO (PDF, 127 KB) early on in the nominations process about the lack of designated categorical expertise in mental health and substance use disorders, and more recently to the director of the NIH, who APA learned plans to represent NIH himself on the board. Although no psychologists were appointed to the governing board, Science GRO staff will be working with the Board of Scientific Affairs to provide a slate of psychologist nominees to a new PCORI Methodology Committee in response to a solicitation from GAO announced on September 28.
