VA Research Chief updates Research Coalition members

Members received updates on the "Million Veteran" program and research on PTSD, resiliency, traumatic brain injury and more
On January 24, Science GRO’s Heather Kelly and colleagues from the Friends of VA Medical Care and Health Research Coalition (FOVA) executive committee met with Joel Kupersmith, MD, Chief Research and Development Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Kupersmith and his staff from the research office at VA headquarters provided an update on recent intramural research efforts, including the kickoff of the “Million Veteran” program, two new Centers of Excellence in traumatic brain injury, new longitudinal studies of PTSD and women veterans, a Marine resiliency study, a large cohort study of Gulf War era veterans, and a new program in deployment health research. FOVA, which represents over 80 associations and organizations and advocates for veteran-focused research programs, also was pleased that new VA guidelines had been released regarding protected time for research, an important ongoing issue for clinician investigators throughout the VA system.
