APAGS Programming at the 2008 APA Convention - Boston, MA
Graduate students from all over the world convened in Boston this year to participate in the 2008 APA Convention and to celebrate APAGS’ 20th Anniversary. Students were able to share their work during the APAGS poster session and by giving talks as a part of the APAGS regular or suite Convention programming.
Convention Highlights
- The APAGS Internship Workshop was a success again this year with more than 150 students participating in the annual workshop that offers tips on finding a psychology internship and guidance on the APPIC application and match process.
- APAGS celebrated it’s 20th Anniversary in style! With support from the National Registry of Health Service Providers in Psychology, APAGS threw a Gala where APAGS students were welcome to eat, drink, and enjoy live jazz music. Other special anniversary programs included a session chaired by APA CEO Dr. Norman Anderson saluting APAGS’ past Chairs and a scholarship program in which APAGS acknowledged four outstanding graduate psychology students who are on track to becoming future pioneers in the field.
- In collaboration with the APA Publications and Communication Board, APAGS developed a Publication Track for students interested in learning how to review journals and to publish their scholarly work. Participants received a certificate of completion from APAGS as acknowledgement of their dedication to gaining competence in this important professional development area.
- APAGS continued to offer the Food For Thought Breakfast series this year. This year’s speakers were Philip Zimbardo, PhD, Melba Vazquez, PhD, Bonnie Strickland, PhD, and Judith V. Jordan, PhD.
- APAGS offered two advanced statistical methods sessions: An Applied Introduction to Modern Missing Data Techniques and an Introduction to Multilevel Modeling. Other program topic areas included psychology licensure and certification, graduate school debt and starting salaries in psychology, microaggressions in our classrooms, balancing personal and professional roles and integrated health care.
We anticipate another great convention in 2009 with an outstanding slate of APAGS programming. It’s not too early to begin thinking about presenting your work at the 2009 Convention which will take place August 6th - 9th in Ontario, Toronto. Please review the 2009 Call for Proposals for more information. On behalf of the APAGS Convention Committee, we hope to see you next year in Toronto!
