Typical Timeline For Completing Your Graduate Degree: A Humorous Perspective
From Someone Who's "Been There and Done That"
Depending on prior degree(s), approximately 4 years:
Year 1
- lots of classes
- memorize the DSM
- look into a "practicum" site.
Year 2
- more classes
- work with clients at a practicum (pre-internship) site (record your
sessions & get excellent supervision)
- think of future sites
Year 3
- still more classes
- think of internship sites
- "integration" paper
- oral comprehensive exams
- dissertation, breathe, practicum site
- continue to record your sessions and get excellent supervision
Year 4
- either do the 1 full time 40hr/wk internship option or the 2 part time
- 20-24hr/wk internship (depends on numerous factors & personality type)
- pass the written integration paper
- pass the orals
- get into your favorite internship site
- get the dissertation over (school = bad...work = good)
- think of state exams, where you want to work/live, how to make it all
happen
- fall in love with psychology all over!
