APAGS Position Announcement(s)

Position: APAGS Member-at-Large Science-Focus
The American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) is seeking a science-focused psychology graduate student who is interested in serving in a national leadership role where s/he can advance a science-focused agenda. This position is a two-year commitment. See the information below for requirements and responsibilities associated with this role. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled by a qualified applicant.

Requirements:

  1. You must be an APAGS member (for details, click here).


  2. You must be at least two (2) years away from graduating (i.e., two years after beginning the term in August 2008).


  3. Must be a graduate student in good standing from a bench scientist program which does not have a clinical training component. Some of these programs include: behavioral neuroscience, biopsychology, cognitive science, developmental psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, psychological methodology, social/personality psychology, experimental psychology.


  4. You must submit the following materials to Nadia Hasan, and Renée Valdez:


    • A signed, completed APAGS Committee Application Agreement.


    • A cover letter indicating the elected position for which you would like to run.


    • An abbreviated curriculum vitae (4 pages maximum).


    • A brief letter of support from your Department Chair or Program Director confirming your student status, anticipated graduation date, and a statement regarding your leadership potential.


    • A statement of 750 words or less describing your experiences, background, reasons for seeking the particular position, and objectives if elected.

Responsibilities:
  • Networking with relevant APA committees, boards, and other organizations, including the APA Science Directorate and the APA Board of Scientific Affairs, in order to represent issues relevant to science graduate students.


  • Participate in APAGS committee listserv discussions to promote common interests of all graduate students.


  • Prepare for and attend fall and spring APAGS business meetings in Washington, DC (fully funded by APAGS).


  • Prepare a brief bi-annual report; report on special projects; and report on official liaisonship activities for business meetings.


  • Submit brief monthly reports to the APAGS committee listserv.


  • Submit a report/paragraph of quarterly activities for the APAGS Campus Bulletin.


  • Contribute substantive articles on psychological science for the APAGS Web site.


  • Collaborate with APAGS Staff to organize the annual APAGS Awards and Scholarship review process.


  • In collaboration with APAGS Staff, Survey and monitor the needs of science-focused graduate students.


  • In collaboration with APAGS Staff, Facilitate APAGS science-focused projects including the development of a Science Student Resource Guide.


  • Mentor incoming representative at the conclusion of your term.
