APAGS Subcommittee Members
Convention Committee | CLGBTC | CEMA | ACT | Eligibility | Application Information
Working with APAGS is a fantastic professional development experience, unlike any other. Please read on for additional information on each of the subcommittees and how to apply.
I. Position Descriptions
APAGS CONVENTION COMMITTEE
Description:
The APAGS Convention Committee is responsible for assisting the APAGS Central Office staff in planning the APAGS convention programs and activities for the annual APA convention. Convention Committee members are fully funded to attend the APA conventions during their terms of service. They are also fully funded to attend the annual planning meeting with staff each winter at the APA headquarters in Washington, D.C.
The Convention Committee evaluates all of the APAGS program proposals and selects the APAGS convention programs. In addition, in consultation with staff, the convention committee develops other student-focused convention programs and activities, manages the APAGS Ambassador program, communicates with program presenters, monitors programs, and collaborates with other divisions, boards, committees, and leaders in APA to help make the APA convention and APAGS programs attractive and relevant to graduate students.
Becoming involved on the APAGS Convention Committee provides APAGS members with the unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, represent students, and learn about APA, APAGS, and areas of psychology that few are otherwise exposed to. You will have opportunities to collaborate with national leaders on a variety of issues and in a variety of formats, not limited to the convention.
Time Commitment and Responsibilities:
Members of the APAGS Convention Committee are required to attend the winter planning meeting (generally held in December) and the annual conventions during their terms (San Francisco, August 16-19, 2007 and Boston, August 14-17, 2008). Members must be willing to dedicate the necessary time to sufficiently prepare for meetings, the convention, and follow-up. Members are also required to participate on periodic conference calls throughout the year, as well as communicate regularly over a closed committee listserv during the year.
APAGS Convention Committee members are very busy at the annual convention -- overseeing and monitoring APAGS programs, assisting staff, helping at the APAGS booth, participating in APAGS dinners and social hours, and attending daily meetings. Convention committee members are expected to represent APAGS at the convention, which is simultaneously exhausting and exhilarating!
Convention Committee members are expected to spearhead projects and plans related to APAGS convention programs as assigned by the APAGS Convention Committee Chair. They are accountable throughout the year for making progress and for meeting their responsibilities at the annual convention.
