APA and APAGS Listserv lists use LISTSERV®,
version 1.8d software. You can find a lot of useful user
information at the LISTSERV®, version 1.8d Web
site at http://www.lsoft.com/products/default.asp?item=listserv-powered.
But the most common commands are summarized below.
Before We Begin, Please Note:All commands (subscribe,
unsubscribe, change preferences, etc.) must be sent to
LISTSERV. If you send a
command to
APAGS International, or
APAGS Internship, or
enter your favorite list name here
your message will be send everyone subscribed to the list,
which is, of course how you post a message to the list, but
will not get the software to do what you want.
One More Warning, Be Careful of the "Reply"
Button. If you hit "reply," your message will be sent
by the LISTSERV® software to all members of the list.
Most of the time that will be the result that you desire.
However, if your intent was to reply only to
the person whose message caught your interest, and you hit
the "reply" option on your email system, be prepared to be
horrified. It's happened to all of us once, at least, with
various degrees of embarrassment. Forewarned is forearmed!
HOW TO JOIN
Write to
LISTSERV and, in the body of
your message (not the subject line), write: SUBSCRIBE NAMEOFLIST
<Your> <Name>
For example:
SUBSCRIBE APAGSINTERNSHIP Terry Gradley
or
SUBSCRIBE APAGSABILITIES Terry Gradley
HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE (LEAVE
A LIST)
Send an email to
LISTSERV and, in the body of
your message (not the subject line), write: SIGNOFF NAMEOFLIST
For example:
SIGNOFF PSYCGRAD
or
SIGNOFF APAEMGS
HOW TO POST A MESSAGE
TO THE LIST
To send a message to all the people currently
subscribed to the list, just send mail to
name of list. So if you are
on the MENTORS list and want to post a message to the whole
list, write
MENTORSin the "To:" box of your
email system.
HOW TO SET YOUR SUBSCRIPTION TO
DIGEST
The DIGEST* command compiles messages posted
to the list over the course of a day and sends them all to
you once a day, or more frequently if there are a lot of messages.
This is a useful feature if you are being flooded with posting
on an active list.
Write to
LISTSERV and, in the text of
your message (not the subject line), write: SET NAMEOFLIST
DIGEST
For example:
SET APAGSINTERNSHIP DIGEST
or
SET MENTORS DIGEST
If your subscription is set to digest and you
want to turn that funtion off, repeat the process above, but
send the command "NODIGEST" instead of "DIGEST."
For example:
SET APAGSINTERNSHIP NODIGEST
________________
*Digests come in two primary flavors: "traditional"
and "MIME." Traditional digests arrive
with each posted message in full following the one before
it--one after the other. MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions) digests list each message's subject line with
a hotlink to the full text, which can be really cool if
your email system supports it. Either way you have it, if
you want it the other way, uses the MIME/NOMINE toggle.
Write to
LISTSERV and, in the text
of your message (not the subject line), write: SET NAMEOFLIST
MIME
(This will turn on MIME message style)
OR
Write to
LISTSERV and, in the text
of your message (not the subject line), write: SET NAMEOFLIST
NOMIME
(This will turn off MIME message style)
For example:
SET APAGSINTERNSHIP MIME
or
SET MENTORS NOMIME
HOW TO CONTACT THE
LIST OWNER:
To contact the list owner, send a message to
Name of List- request. Your message will be forwarded
to the APAGS Program Coordinator for reply.
HOW TO USE THE COOL WEB APA LISTSERVE
INTERFACE:
APA's listserv system also has a Web interface
available to its listserv subscribers. The http://listserve.apa.org/site
will allow you to control all your listserv preferences with
mouse clicks rather than arcane commands that hearken back
to the late 80s, and will also allow you to easily access
the archives of lists to which you are subscribed. You will
need to set up a password to use the site, but the process
is not difficult. Here's how to do it:
How to Register for a APA LISTSERV Password
Log on to the Internet at http://listserve.apa.org/
Click on the APA
logo.
When prompted, please
enter your e-mail address and the desired password, then click
on the "Register password" button. If you already had a LISTSERV
password, but cannot remember what it was, this procedure
will automatically replace your existing password with the
new one you will be entering below.
E-mail address:
_______________________
Password: ____________________________
Password (again):
_______________________ (verification)
When you hit the
"Register password" button, you will be transferred to this
page:
"Confirmation e-mailed
Your password registration request has been accepted. For
your protection, the password will not be activated just yet
(anyone could have completed this form using your e-mail address).
To activate your password, simply follow the instructions
which have been e-mailed to you at joeuser@example.com. Please
wait until you receive a message from LISTSERV saying 'Your
new password was registered successfully" before trying to
use it with the Web interface.'"
You can then easily
access your subscription information, change your email address,
your name, set your preferences, search the archives, take
yourself temporarily or permanently off the list, and more.
That's why the interface is officially "Cool"!
