Convention Committee Members 2010
Karen Kersting — Chair, Convention Committee
Kersting is a third-year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology PhD program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her primary research and clinical interest is in health psychology and she is currently working on a research project on coping with cancer diagnosis. She also enjoys teaching undergraduate students in courses including research statistics and the Psychology of Women. Kersting joins the APAGS Convention Committee as chair after being a member of the APAGS committee for two years as Member-at-Large, Membership Recruitment/Retention Focus. She hopes to build on the success of past APAGS Convention programs while continuing to grow the diversity and quality of events geared to students.Christine Buchheit — Committee Member
Buchheit is currently in her first year at San Francisco State University, earning an MA in Sexuality Studies. She also holds an M.A. in Community Counseling from Loyola University Chicago, and is currently working on research projects that focus on long-term outcomes of LGBT youth development and bisexual identity formation. Her research interests include sexual identity development and related stigma, prejudice, and discrimination. She holds citizenship in Germany and the United States, and is fluent in German and English. Christine is an avid traveler, runner, and outdoor lover.
Celeste Malone — Committee Member
Malone is a third-year doctoral student in school psychology at Temple University. She earned her BA in psychology from Brown University and also received a MS in counseling with a specialization in school counseling from Johns Hopkins University. Her primary research interests are the development and evaluation of multicultural competence in school psychologists. Other areas of interest include the educational achievement gap between White students and ethnic minority students and the development of mathematics assessments and interventions. In addition to her work on the APAGS Convention Committee, Celeste is an active member of several committees with the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and the Association of School Psychologists on Pennsylvania.
Jesse Matthews — Committee Member
Matthews is a Clinical PsyD candidate at Immaculata University, currently working on his dissertation and applying for internships. He lives in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania with his wife and three sons and works as a private school counselor. Jesse has a B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and a MA from West Chester University. His research interests include nontraditional students, self-care, child and adolescent health, and the Internet. Jesse enjoys working with children, adolescents, and young adults. As a psychologist he would like to do assessment and psychotherapy, and is also interested in community outreach and primary care. Jesse enjoys leading an active lifestyle and volunteering in his community.
Elizabeth Nielson — Committee Member
Nielson is a fourth-year Clinical PhD student at Walden University, on externship at the Center for Motivation and Change in NYC. Nielson and her husband in her hometown of Woodstock, NY, has a MA in from the New School for Social Research and is a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor in New York State. She also has a B.F.A. from Parsons School of Design, speaks Spanish and Portuguese, and has spent years living and working in South America. Nielson’s research interests include behavioral treatment of addictions, treatment provider attitudes, and stigma surrounding chemical dependency. Nielson enjoys learning foreign languages, traveling, reading, and painting.
Angela AuBuchon — Committee Member
Angela AuBuchon is a fifth-year doctoral student in Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri. Her emphasis is in cognition and neuroscience, and her research focuses on the developmental changes that occur in working memory. In particular she is interested in how these changes might be related to other cognitive skills that mature during preschool and elementary school such as language comprehension and complex reasoning. As a member of the convention committee, she hopes to promote the importance of basic experimental research and to encourage involvement from graduate students who do basic research.
