Campaign for a New Era
In 2000, the Board of Trustees of the American Psychological Foundation launched the first fundraising campaign in the history of APF: Campaign for a New Era. The campaign sought to raise $7 million by the end of 2004. APF wound up raising $7.6 million to advance psychology.
APF has always fostered the best and brightest students in psychology, supported cutting-edge psychological research, and recognized those psychologists whose excellent projects, research, and careers have already led the way in advances that will benefit humanity. Campaign for a New Era enabled APF to deepen and broaden the scope of these programs. "We wanted to give psychology away and improve the well-being of all of us for generations to
come," says APF President, Dorothy W. Cantor, Psy.D. "I think the campaign allowed us to do that in an even bigger and better way."
The campaign priorities were research and program innovation in the areas of understanding and preventing violence, and in understanding the connection between the mind and the body. APF also aimed to increase the size of its endowment for scholarships and existing grants in areas such as serious mental illness, neuropsychology, child psychology, and the elimination of prejudice such as homophobia. "This was a pivotal period in APF's history. The trustees and others who cared deeply about psychology mobilized to advance the field in novel directions," notes Elisabeth R. Straus, Executive Vice President/Executive Director of APF.
A Campaign Leadership Cabinet worked with other leaders in psychology to ensure the success of the campaign and the future of psychology. Members of the Leadership Cabinet included Dorothy W.
