Kazak receives 2009 APF Cummings PSYCHE Prize
The American Psychological Foundation (APF) Board of Trustees has named Anne E. Kazak, PhD, ABPP, of the University of Pennsylvania, as the 2009 APF Cummings Prize recipient. The $50,000 Cummings Prize recognizes a psychologist whose career has expanded the role of the psychologist as a primary care provider working side-by-side with primary care physicians in the setting of organized healthcare systems.
Dr. Kazak is a Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, Director of the Department of Psychology and Deputy Director of the Behavioral Health Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Director of the Center for Pediatric Traumatic Stress, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. A licensed clinical psychologist, Kazak has provided patient care with multidisciplinary pediatric healthcare teams and has developed models to advance such integrated primary care for children and their families. She is a recognized mentor for psychologists, pediatricians and nurses.
Editor of the Journal of Family Psychology and former Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology, Dr. Kazak has held national leadership positions including serving as President of the Society of Pediatric Psychology (Division 54) and Chair of the Council of Editors of the American Psychological Association. She also served as Chair of the APA Taskforce on Evidence Based Practice for Children and Adolescents. She has published over 150 papers and chapters and 3 books, and has received funding through the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institute of Nursing Research, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations, and St. Baldrick’s Foundation for her work, including a Senior Mentoring Award from the NCI. “Dr. Kazak is an innovative national and international leader in psychology whose work is at the intersection of pediatric and family psychology, and influenced by her training in developmental and community psychology,” stated Nadine J. Kaslow, PhD, of Emory University in a letter of support for Dr. Kazak.
Dr. Kazak plans to use the Prize monies to advance her work in pediatric healthcare settings and to further develop materials that would be useful for patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Nicholas Cummings, PhD, and his wife Dorothy established the Cummings Prize through the Cummings Foundation, a Reno, Nevada-based nonprofit educational and research institute dedicated to excellence, innovation and the importance of behavioral health services. The Cummings will endow the prize with a $1 million bequest.
The Prize will be presented during the 2009 American Psychological Association (APA) Convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in August 2009. The Cummings Foundation will also hold a ceremony to honor Dr. Kazak in Philadelphia later this year.
