Letter to Cable Affiliate
(Date) (Address) Dear (Name) On behalf of the _______ Psychological Association (initials), (I/we) (am/are) asking for
your cooperation in putting together a (School/Community) Youth
Forum in our area. MTV recently sent information about this effort to local cable
affiliates around the country. Psychologists across the country are arranging similar forums, which are part of a
broader youth anti-violence initiative spearheaded by MTV and the American Psychological
Association (APA). A number of other organizations have joined together in support of
MTV's youth anti-violence campaign called "Fight for Your Rights: Take a Stand
Against Violence," including the White House, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S.
Department of Education. During this forum, MTV's "Fight for Your Rights " special will be shown. The
show is being produced in conjunction with APA and is aimed at helping youth recognize the
warning signs of violent behavior and what to do when they recognize these signs in
themselves or in their peers. After the tape is viewed, a psychologist will lead a
discussion about their reaction to the show, how to cope with anger, how to spot warning
signs in their peers, what to do if they are present and ways to get help. (I/we) would like to team with you to identify a (school/location) in the community where (we/I)
could host a discussion on youth violence with young people. We could also work together
to publicize the event and identify local leaders to take part. As graphically demonstrated by the recent rash of school shootings, the issue of youth
violence strikes at the heart of every community. (I/we) will
be calling you in the next few days to determine your interest in this timely and
important event. In the meantime, if you have any questions, you may contact (me/us) at (phone number). Thank you
for your consideration. Sincerely, (Name)
