Dear Editor:

The recent rash of shootings on school campuses has thrust youth violence into the national spotlight. Statistics show that violence is rising at an alarming rate among our youth, and according to a recent MTV poll, 92% of students nationwide say violence in schools is a serious problem.

While there are no simple solutions to this problem, these facts serve as a clear reminder that we must talk to our children about more than just sex and drugs. We also need to have frank conversations about violence.

The (name of association) Psychological Association, MTV and (community forum partner) are reaching out to youth by hosting school and community forums in (name of city) to talk about the warning signs of violent behavior and what young people can do when they recognize these signs in themselves or in their peers. In order for our efforts to be successful, we need the support of the entire community.

Do your part by taking a few minutes with your child, a young family member or the youth next door to review the American Psychological Association's free "Warning Signs" guide. Call 800.268.0078 for your free copy and look over the information together. If even one child learns there are alternatives to violence, you will have made a difference.
