Dear (Name):

As graphically demonstrated by the recent rash of school shootings, the issue of youth violence strikes at the heart of every community. While there is no simple solution to this problem, the _________ Psychological Association, MTV and (Community Forum Partner) are stepping forward to respond.

We have joined forces to convene a special community youth forum on teen violence, on (insert date) at (insert location). This forum is aimed at helping youth recognize the warning signs of violent behavior and what to do when they recognize these signs in themselves or in their peers. It is our goal to provide this valuable information to as much of the community as possible. We would be pleased to assist you with a story on this timely and important subject and have enclosed the following materials:

  • Statistics on juvenile crime
  • A "Warning Signs" Guide
  • An advisory about a local youth forum

You may be interested to know, psychologists around the country are arranging similar youth forums, as part of the nationwide youth anti-violence initiative spearheaded by the American Psychological Association (APA) and MTV. This project is part of MTV's broader youth anti-violence effort that also includes the White House, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education as co-sponsors.

I will be calling you in the next few days to determine your interest in doing a story on this most pressing and difficult problem. In the meantime, if you have any questions, you may contact me at (phone number). Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
