Letter to school principal

Dear (Name):

On behalf of the ________ Psychological Association (initials), (I/we) (am/are) asking for your cooperation in setting up a youth forum on teen violence at your campus. I am sure you will agree that youth violence is an important subject that needs all of our attention.

Psychologists across the country are arranging similar school youth forums, which are part of a broader youth anti-violence initiative spearheaded by MTV and the American Psychological Association (APA). A number of other organizations have joined together in support of MTV's youth anti-violence campaign called "Fight for Your Rights: Take a Stand Against Violence," including the White House, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education.

During this forum, MTV's 30-minute special "Fight for Your Rights" will be shown. The show is being produced in conjunction with APA and is aimed at helping youth recognize the warning signs of violent behavior and what to do when they recognize these signs in themselves or in their peers. After the tape is viewed, a psychologist will lead a discussion with students. They will be encouraged to talk about their reaction to the show, how to cope with anger, how to spot warning signs in their peers, what to do if they are present and ways to get help.

Given the sensitive nature of this topic and the desire to inspire dynamic discussion, the forum would best be handled in class-sized groups of students. Perhaps (I/we) could arrange to hold forums in a series of classes, or conduct a forum during a meeting of an after-school club. However, if you believe a general school assembly is more appropriate, (I/we) would be willing to consider that option as well.

(I/we) look forward to working with your school, and (I/we) will be calling you in the next few days to determine your interest in this timely and important project. In the meantime, if you have any questions, you may call (me/us) at (phone number). Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
