The Office of Continuing Education in Psychology

The Office of Continuing Education in Psychology offers a wide range of continuing professional education opportunities for psychologists. This office works with the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) which is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and evaluation of continuing education programs and products offered by the association. The Continuing Education programs offered by the office include our Independent Study programs provided in a variety of formats and the workshops and sessions offered for CE credit at the annual APA convention.

We currently offer Independent Study in the following formats:

APA Online Academy programs 
• Courses offer multimedia presentations, downloadable PowerPoint slides, and an exam.
• Take courses from the comfort of your own home or any location that has access to the Internet. 
• Individuals taking these courses will receive their CE certificate immediately upon successful completion (75% or higher).

APA text-based programs
• Select from more than 80 programs based on high-quality APA publications (Books/Journals and Exams are sold separately)
• Programs cover a broad range of interests
• Exams for book-based programs may be purchased online or by hardcopy
• Individuals taking online exams will receive their CE certificate immediately upon successful completion (75% or higher)

APA DVD Series programs--the DVDs feature distinguished psychologists demonstrating specific psychotherapeutic approaches to a wide range of patient problems.
• DVDs and Exams are sold separately
• Exams may be purchased online or by hardcopy
• Individuals taking online exams will receive their CE certificate immediately upon successful completion (75% or higher)

At the APA Annual Convention – CE Workshops and CE Sessions

At each APA Annual Convention, the APA CEP Office and the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) offer approximately 70 half-day and full-day workshops on a range of topics.  Past programming has featured ethics, assessment, geriatrics, psychopharmacology, and marriage/family among others.  Each year, we seek new and innovative proposals to meet the lifelong learning needs of the APA membership.  The call for CE Workshop Proposals opens each year in mid-August.  Decisions are made in early January.  Workshop enrollment opens mid-April.

In addition to CE workshops, the CEP Office offers CE credit for selected convention sessions.  Sessions are submitted by APA Divisions and APA Directorates/Offices for review and consideration by the CEP Office and the CEC.  Our goal is to work with APA Divisions/Directorates to provide CE credit for sessions that offer high quality educational programming during convention and feature a broad range of topics.  Convention registration is required to attend sessions whether claiming CE credit or not.  All sessions offering CE credits are identified in the APA Convention Program; there is a fee for processing CE credits.
