Providing Psychological Service During Traumatic Events:
How to Prepare for Duty

The events of September 11, 2001 created new realities for all of us. First, a terrorist attack occurred that placed unimaginable demands on many mental health professionals; demands for which few of us were prepared or qualified to deal with. Second, our sense of presumed safety in daily life has given way to feelings of vulnerability -- undercurrents of tension, grief, and helplessness that for some continue to have a daily impact, especially as we move toward the anniversary of that tragic day. While we might never again experience such a national event, we can be sure that natural disasters and other traumatic events will affect the communities we live in from time to time, and that as psychologists we will be called upon to provide critical mental health services both during and following such crises.

This seminar will address the unique issues psychologists face as we "Prepare for Duty." Three experienced psychologists with first-hand knowledge of terrorism, serious criminal events, and natural disasters, will address the questions confronting mental health professionals who seek to equip themselves for this challenge. Through their own stories, they will offer a realistic view of the obstacles faced, and rewards gained, when working under the unusual conditions created by traumatic events. They will also emphasize practical techniques used by emergency service workers and trauma-experienced psychologists to provide effective treatment in such settings.
