Description
This four-part advanced workshop presents an integrative treatment approach for improving executive functioning (EF) following traumatic brain injury (TBI), combining two empirically based interventions: problem solving (SWAPS) and emotional regulation (EmReg). EF deficits are among the most disabling consequences of TBI and an obstacle to social and vocational recovery. Part 1 provides the theoretical and empirical basis of the two interventions. Parts 2 & 3 involve training in SWAPS and EmReg. Part 4 is a simulation of a treatment session facilitated by the instructors.
Learning Objectives
1. Explain the consequences of executive dysfunction following TBI,
2. Assess appropriateness and readiness for participation in an integrative problem solving/emotional regulation treatment,
3. Describe the five steps of problem-solving training (SWAPS),
4. Describe a model of emotional regulation EmReg following TBI,
5. Utilize an integrative approach of SWAPS and EmReg when working with individuals with TBI,
6. Explain factors that optimize treatment delivery and integration of SWAPS and EmReg, and
7. Predict and address challenges in the delivery of SWAPS and EmReg.
