Description
This intermediate workshop presents cutting-edge research and training on integrating and applying the evidence-based practice of screening and brief intervention (SBI) for alcohol and other drugs within primary and mental health care service delivery settings. Challenges associated with SBI implementation in the clinical setting are addressed as opportunities for enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of brief interventions within behavioral health practice environments. Participants will learn innovative and creative strategies for making SBI more relevant and responsive to a range of diverse target populations across the life span.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the research supporting the efficacy of screening and brief intervention (SBI) within behavioral health care settings and other service delivery environments;
2. Select the most appropriate screening tools and methods assessing alcohol and other drug use for different target populations across the life span;
3. Utilize motivational interviewing techniques to deliver target population-relevant and responsive brief interventions addressing alcohol and other drug use;
4. Describe and implement the essential components of a comprehensive and targeted brief alcohol and other drug-specific interventions with an awareness of the specific needs and cultures of different target populations;
5. Identify circumstances in which the use of technology, such as Web-based screening and brief intervention methods, might be appropriate within clinical practice;
6. Address the challenges associated with SBI implementation within service delivery settings;
7. Comprehend how SBI for alcohol and other drug use might be replicated and sustained within a wide range of service delivery settings.
