Description
This introductory workshop presents an overview of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), an 8-week, evidence-based program that combines mindfulness and cognitive therapy techniques for the prevention of depressive relapse. Through lecture, discussion, and experiential exercises, this workshop will cover the characteristics and components of mindfulness, the structure and delivery of the MBCT program, and the content of the eight MBCT sessions and will explore the role of mindfulness for the clinician.
Learning Objectives
1. Identify the cognitive and emotional triggers of relapse in depression,
2. Describe the role that rumination has in perpetuating negative thoughts and behaviors,
3. Define mindfulness as it is used in clinical practice,
4. Explain the structure of the MBCT program,
5. Practice mindfulness-based techniques to help clients de-center from the narrative of negative thoughts and emotions,
6. Explain the differences in group process in MBCT vs. CBT groups, and
7. Discuss the role of a personal mindfulness practice for the therapist.
