Opening Session
Thursday, August 14
5:00–6:30 p.m.
Grand Ballroom
Boston Convention and Exhibition Center
The Opening Session will be a great way to kick off your 2008 convention experience. The program features musical entertainment, the presentation of the APA Award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology, and a keynote presentation from best-selling author, Malcolm Gladwell.
Malcolm Gladwell is a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine and wrote two New York Times #1 bestsellers: The Tipping Point and Blink. In 2005, Time magazine named Mr. Gladwell one of its 100 Most Influential People. His editor describes his work as a new genre of story, an idea-driven narrative that's focused on the everyday and combines research with material that's more personal, social and historical. Don't miss this exciting speaker!
Join us as Edward Zigler, PhD, Sterling Professor of Psychology, Emeritus, at Yale University, receives the APA's highest honor, the APA award for Outstanding Lifetime Contributions to Psychology. Dr. Zigler founded and is Director Emeritus of Yale's Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy, one of the first centers in the nation to combine training in developmental science and social policy construction. In addition to being one of the founders of the field of applied developmental psychology, Dr. Zigler pioneered the discipline of developmental psychopathology as well as the developmental approach to mental retardation and adult psychopathology. He conceptualized the School of the 21 st Century, which has been adopted by more than 1,300 schools in 20 states. Working with state governments and private foundations, he has played a central role in generating the momentum toward establishing universal preschool education. Dr. Zigler helped to plan several national projects and policies, including Head Start, Early Head Start, and the Family and Medical Leave Act. In the early 1970s, he served as the founding Director of the U.S. Office of Child Development (now ACYF) and Chief of the U.S. Children's Bureau.
Please join us as we enjoy the musical talents and diversity of the Boston City Singers, a treble chorus, who are known as Boston's acclaimed youth and children's chorus. The Boston City Singers began its independent operation in 2003 and has prided itself in providing unique music education and performance opportunities to young people, regardless of their musical or socio-economic circumstances. Under the direction of Jane Money they have performed at public and civic events including a range of venues such as City Hall, Fenway Park, and the John Hancock Hall. Their repertoire also includes classical, medieval, traditional folk, jazz, Broadway, international and multi-cultural works.
Let the exciting performances and impressive speakers at the Opening Session set the stage for your 2008 convention experience!
