Eliminating Health Disparities: What’s Psychology Got to Do With It? (2209)

2009 Award for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology

Nancy E. Adler, PhD, is professor of psychology in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of California–San Francisco (UCSF), vicechair of the Department of Psychiatry, and director of the Center for Health and Community. She received her BA from Wellesley College and PhD in psychology from Harvard University. At UCSF, she helped found a graduate program in health psychology and now directs a National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored postdoctoral program in psychology and medicine and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded Health and Society Scholars Program. Dr. Adler’s research has examined psychosocial predictors and consequences of unwanted pregnancy and the mechanisms by which socioeconomic status (SES) affects health, including the role of subjective social status. She directs the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on SES and health. Dr. Adler is a fellow of APA and the Association for Psychological Science. She served as president of APA’s Division 34 and received its Superior Service Award. She also received the Division 38 award for Outstanding Contribution to Health Psychology. She has served on APA task forces on psychological effects of abortion and on SES and recently served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health. She is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and was named a National Associate of the National Academies of Science. She serves on the National Academies’ Report Review Committee, has recently chaired an IOM committee on the psychosocial needs of cancer patients, and currently chairs a committee on women’s health research.
