Plenary Session:
Invited Address by Jennifer A. Richeson, PhD—

Negotiating Interracial Interactions: Costs, Consequences, and Possibilities (2147)

Friday, Aug. 7, 11:00–11:50 a.m., Room 716B

Jennifer A. Richeson, PhD, is an associate professor of psychology and African American studies and a faculty affi liate at the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University. She is also an affi liate and executive board member of Northwestern’s Center on Social Disparities and Health (C2S: Cells to Society). Dr. Richeson’s research focuses on prejudice, stereotyping, and intergroup relations. Her work concerns the ways in which social group memberships, such as race and socioeconomic status, affect the way people think, feel, and behave. More specifically, her research investigates antecedents and consequences of prejudice and stereotyping from the perspectives of members of traditionally stigmatized groups as well as members of traditionally dominant groups. Through her research, Dr. Richeson hopes to contribute to a better understanding of intergroup relations and to bring to light pitfalls in current approaches to prejudice reduction. She has received many awards, including the Dissertation Award and Early Career Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and the 2009 APA Award for Distinguished Scientific Early Career Contributions to Psychology. In 2006, she was named one of 25 MacArthur “Genius” fellows for her research “highlighting and analyzing major challenges facing all races in America and in the continuing role played by prejudice and stereotyping in our lives.”
