What the Global War on Terror Teaches Us About Trauma (2178)

Paula P. Schnurr, PhD, is an internationally recognized leader in the field of traumatic stress. She serves as deputy executive director of the Department of Veterans Affairs National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and as research professor of psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School. She is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Traumatic Stress and the Clinician’s Trauma Update–Online and is the former president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. She has written over 100 articles and book chapters and an APA book, Trauma and Health: Physical Health Consequences of Exposure to Extreme Stress. Since joining the National Center for PTSD in 1989, Dr. Schnurr has conducted a series of studies on the outcomes associated with exposure to traumatic events. Her research has been instrumental in calling attention to the physical health problems associated with PTSD. She is known for her expertise in the methods of clinical trials and has led several of the most important studies of psychotherapy for PTSD, including a trial on the treatment of PTSD in female veterans, for which she recently received a Health Breakthrough Award from Ladies Home Journal. She has a long-standing commitment to research that has practical implications for addressing the needs of veterans and others with PTSD.
