Couples often hope for a perfect relationship. Unfortunately, intimate relationships are all too often unsatisfying and marked by conflict. Common problems in intimate relationships can include poor communication between partners, different future goals or plans, "growing apart", and infidelity.
Behavioral marital therapy has been well-established as a beneficial treatment for marital distress. Some evidence also suggests that emotionally-focused couples therapy and insight oriented marital therapy are useful for treatment of marital distress. While other psychotherapies may be helpful for treatment of marital distress, they have not been evaluated scientifically in the same way as the treatments listed here.
An informative site on couple distress and behavioral marital therapy is maintained by the counseling center at University of Tulsa.
